On the morning of November 28, Singapore Management University (SMU) organized a workshop on "Development and implementation of green finance classification system: international experience and application in Vietnam" for more than 80 enterprises, management agencies, financial institutions and international experts in Ho Chi Minh City.

The program takes place in the context of Vietnam aiming for net zero emissions by 2050, promoting green capital flows as one of the important drivers for sustainable economic growth.

During the program, Associate Professor Theodor Cojoianu of Sustainable Finance at Singapore Management University shared the latest research on the development trends of green finance classification systems in the world , and introduced the global initiative Sustainable Finance Taxonomy Mapper.

Just launched in November 2025, this is the first tool in the world that allows for the comparison and connection of many national green finance classification systems, helping to clarify the compatibility of green criteria in each economic sector.

The green finance classification map platform was developed by experts from universities such as Singapore Management University, Dublin City University, University College Dublin, University of Edinburgh... as well as government organizations from Europe and the United Nations.

The platform provides a map connecting green standards across countries, thereby increasing transparency, reducing classification discrepancies and supporting the building of a common platform for sustainable capital flows.

“The goal is to provide data, research tools and education as a public good, supporting policymakers and financial institutions to build more sustainable and efficient financial systems. Harmonization of green finance classification systems is seen as a prerequisite for promoting the operation of global green capital flows,” said Associate Professor Theodor Cojoianu.

Also in the program, experts brought a lot of knowledge, practical experience and updated information on the green finance development roadmap, green finance classification system, preparation for ESG transparency requirements and increasing the ability to attract international capital.

Dr. Scott Fritzen, Vice President of Singapore Management University, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the strategic role of green finance classification systems in sustainable development.

A national classification system would help improve the transparency of financial markets and create a 'common language' for countries, financial institutions and businesses to cooperate more effectively, he said.

“At the regional level, compatibility and connectivity between financial classification systems will be key to promoting sustainable capital flows, especially as economies face common climate challenges,” he said.

Singapore Management University (SMU) is one of Asia's leading universities for business, management and social sciences. SMU is also a regional leader in areas such as finance, data analytics and public administration.

In Singapore, the school is often considered in the top 3 alongside the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

This is also one of the first universities in Singapore to have a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City to enhance cooperation and expand research between SMU and Vietnam and ASEAN countries.

At the same time, SMU also implements scholarships and training programs on green finance for the community in Vietnam.
