Taiwan suddenly refuses Vietnamese visitors with advanced visas from Japan and Korea

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên13/09/2023

Specifically, from 10am tomorrow (September 14), visitors using advanced visas from Korea and Japan to apply for e-visas to enter Taiwan will not be accepted, previously accepted visas can still be used until they expire. The above change only applies to visitors from Vietnam, visitors from other Southeast Asian countries will still apply the same policy.

Vietnamese travel companies believe that under this new policy, the number of customers registering for tours to some markets such as Japan and South Korea will be significantly reduced because currently there are a number of customers going to Japan and South Korea just to get advanced visas for the purpose of entering Taiwan. This will not be accepted from September 14 when the new e-visa regulation takes effect.

This means that tourists and their families who already have advanced Japanese and Korean visas and want to travel to Taiwan will have to switch to submitting and reviewing visa applications, instead of getting immediate results as before, they may have to wait up to 8 days for results.

The above regulation is assessed to have a negative impact on Vietnamese travel agencies as well as the Vietnamese tourism market in the last months of the year and in the long term. However, for tourists who already have a US visa (not stamped with cancellation) or an Australian visa (still valid), they can still apply for an electronic visa to enter Taiwan as before.

Taiwan is always on the list of favorite destinations of Vietnamese tourists because of its short travel time, beautiful natural scenery, attractive cuisine with special night market dishes, and diverse shopping experiences.

This is not the first time Taiwan has tightened visa policies for Vietnamese tourists. Previously, with the aim of attracting tourism, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office issued a conditional visa exemption policy for special groups. However, during the pilot process, some problems arose. Therefore, the Taiwanese government has adopted a tighter visa policy for Vietnamese citizens.

In 2018, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau also suspended the Hong Kong visa policy for Vietnamese tourists after 152 Vietnamese tourists disappeared in Taiwan. The visa program was then re-issued in March 2019, but with more conditions and fewer priority companies.
