Mr. Nguyen Quang Nghi's family's breeding buffaloes are healthy and grow well.

Participating in Sub-Project 1 are 489 poor, near-poor, and newly escaped-poverty households who are members of tea production and cattle and buffalo breeding cooperatives in the communes of An Khanh, Tan Thai, and Khoi Ky of Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ha's family is one of the households that received support for breeding animals from the Project to support buffalo breeding for sustainable poverty reduction in Khoi Ky commune, from December 2023. Mr. Ha shared that due to the difficult economic conditions, over the years, despite great efforts, there has been a lack of capital to invest in high-quality livestock. Since the family received support from the State for breeding animals and care processes, Mr. Ha has especially followed the measures to raise and prevent diseases, so the buffalo is very healthy. After 10 months, the buffalo gave birth to a calf, which is currently being cared for and raised very well.

“I am very grateful to the Party and the State for supporting buffaloes, raising techniques and caring for my family and many other disadvantaged households in the area. This has also created jobs for poor and near-poor households like us. If the buffaloes grow well, my family will try to escape poverty this year,” Mr. Ha confided.

As a near-poor household in Hoa Binh hamlet, Khoi Ky commune, Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province, Mr. Nguyen Quang Nghi's family was also supported with breeding buffaloes in December 2023. Up to now, the buffaloes have grown and developed well, without any infectious diseases.

“The buffalo is a great asset for the family to escape poverty, so I take good care of it. Every day, I check to see if the buffalo shows any unusual signs. If it is sick, I will immediately report it to the commune officials for timely handling and ensuring disease prevention for the buffalo,” said Mr. Nghi.

The project to support sustainable poverty reduction by raising breeding buffaloes in Khoi Ky commune in 2023 aims to increase income for people to escape poverty sustainably, limit re-poverty and narrow the income gap as well as living standards of hamlets and households.

The project will be implemented from July 2023 to July 2025, with a total budget of more than 370 million VND, creating conditions for poor and near-poor households participating in the project to access new science and technology, knowledge on breeding buffaloes to promote production development to create jobs and increase income.

Sharing about this content, Mr. Le Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Khoi Ky commune, said: "The commune government has announced and recommended to the people to prevent diseases for livestock and poultry every year. Especially in winter, the commune also promptly propagates and announces, so that people raising livestock in the area clean their barns, cover them tightly to ensure warmth for livestock and poultry to grow and develop well, without disease."

Households supported with breeding female buffaloes expect to increase their income and soon escape poverty.

To effectively implement the Project to support buffalo breeding to reduce poverty sustainably in the area, the People's Committee of Khoi Ky commune also requested participating households to fully implement biosafety livestock farming measures, properly manage breeding animals, water sources, food, and enhance care and feeding to improve the resistance of livestock.

In particular, proactively carry out disinfection and sterilization to destroy pathogens to ensure that livestock do not get sick and do not spread epidemics according to the instructions of specialized agencies and local authorities.

Accordingly, households raising buffalo and cows for reproduction are supported with breeding stock and care techniques. The project organizes technical training courses for households participating in the project, visits, learning experiences, and supports materials and breeding stock.

Because it is a breeding buffalo, the profits earned in the first year may not be available, but from the second year, the female buffaloes will give birth to calves, creating breeding animals for raising beef buffaloes. From there, the income value from production will be increased, the economic efficiency of poor and near-poor households will be increased, helping to stabilize their lives and escape poverty sustainably, and reducing the gap in income and living standards between households.
