Summers gone by…

Việt NamViệt Nam30/05/2025

“The bicycle baskets are full of royal poinciana flowers, where are you taking my summer to...”.

Looking at the photos posted on Facebook, sparkling with images of female students in ao dai under bright red phoenix flowers when summer comes, I suddenly remember the song that has become the "slogan" of the season.

Summer often evokes memories of our school days. Photo: HT

Anyone who has gone through school years will surely have summers in their own memories. Not necessarily because it was the time when "no one knew about their first love" . But also because this "first devil, second ghost, third student" age has too many memories to remember. Except for a few students who, due to poor circumstances, had to work hard to make a living to help their parents, the majority of the rest were at the age of only worrying about eating, studying and playing. My summer was the time when friends gathered at my house, cooked something together and then gathered to talk about everything under the sun. Of course, I had to have my mother's support in the kitchen. Until now, nearly 30 years later, when I occasionally meet this or that child, they talk about my yard, the fruit trees in the garden and the dishes my mother cooked for them such as duck curry, vermicelli soup, boiled chicken porridge...

And then there are the trips by... bicycle. About 30 years ago, the Cao Van Lau road from Kim Son bridge (also known as Quay bridge) to Bac Lieu beach was very far. The road was rocky and bumpy, and you had to ride a bicycle. Back then, when a man and a woman rode together, my friends would immediately become suspicious, so I only dared to sit behind a girl to go out. Because the women rode together, we had to take turns driving, oh how tiring! But it was fun.

One year, after the end of the school year, as a reward for us, the History teacher also took the class on a field trip. We visited the SOS Children's Village in Ca Mau , visited the historical site of Noc Nang (now in Gia Rai town), and visited the tomb of the late musician Cao Van Lau, which at that time was literally just the tomb of Mr. Sau Lau and his wife located in a patch of overgrown grass on the way in, also full of grass, not as majestic and solemn as it is now called the Memorial Site of Southern Folk Music and Musician Cao Van Lau.

But most people are moved by summer because it is "the time when no one knows, the silent first love" , because of the vague stories of school age - the story "everyone understands but one person does not understand" . There is nothing more beautiful than first love with the first vibrations of life. Perhaps, for many people, that feeling will forever remain in the deepest corner of the heart, of memories. "Forever as the beginning" , even though it has gone far away, people still use that word to send to each other, it is their feelings for a special person - the specialness of things belonging to first love. Because it is so pure, it is easy to engrave deeply in everyone's heart.

“My beloved seasons! Far away, thousands of memories. The seasons of deer eyes of the past go with the distant sky and clouds. Like long rivers remembering the old source. Gradually drifting towards the ocean, when will the days and months return?” . I wrote this song in my diary on May 5, 2001, the year I graduated. It has been more than 20 years, the beautiful memories of that time until now I cannot forget even though so many things have changed” - a former student of Bac Lieu High School for the Gifted, now a teacher at that same school, shared when sitting with friends and talking about his past summers.

Those torn pieces of paper from one friend to another with scribbles, sometimes just random words, sometimes lyrics from a school song... are all memories that some people still keep in drawers for decades until the paper is gone, the handwriting has faded! What are they if not first-life emotions kept with respect and deep love...

“Farewell to time, the river flows forever/ My heart never fades from the season of first love” . The summers that have passed in my life, your life, must always be a sky full of memories that remain forever even though time passes forever. Because of the memories of school days and for many people, those first loves of those years have become a whole season of nostalgia when mentioned...
