Ensuring students' health on cold days

Việt NamViệt Nam28/01/2024

These days, Son La province is strongly affected by a cold spell, with temperatures in some mountainous areas ranging from 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, directly affecting the health and learning of students. The temperature in the highlands remains low, and some schools have allowed students to take a day off. In schools that are still in operation, teachers have implemented many measures to prevent and combat the cold, ensuring students stay warm.

Thuan Chau has 78 schools from kindergarten to secondary school, with nearly 50,000 students, most of whom are ethnic minorities. The district's Departmentof Education and Training has proactively prepared plans to respond to severe cold spells so that teaching and learning are not affected.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Ton, Head of the District Education and Training Department, said: Right from the beginning of winter, the Department has directed schools to check and repair classrooms and boarding rooms, ensuring that they are windproof, have enough light and keep students warm. Pay attention to their diet, dress warmly and ensure blankets and mattresses for each student. Regularly update and monitor weather developments; increase propaganda and guidance for parents on measures to prevent and protect students from the cold.

At Nam Lau Secondary School, Thuan Chau District, there are 516 students, of which nearly 200 are boarding students, most of whom live far away. Teachers always spend time, attention, and care to help students protect their health during the cold winter days. Teacher Luong Thi Minh, Principal of the school, said: In recent days, there have been continuous cold spells. The school regularly updates weather information and checks classroom facilities and boarding rooms for students; prepares enough warm blankets for boarding students, ensuring nutrition for them. This winter, the school has received 6,214 warm coats; woolen scarves, woolen hats, and warm blankets from charitable organizations in and outside the province to support students.

Giang Thi Chia, a 7A student at Nam Lau Secondary School, said: Every time there is a cold spell, our teachers inform us in advance to prepare warm clothes; remind us to limit going out on cold days. Teachers also call for charity to support clothes and warm blankets so that we are warm enough in the winter and healthy enough to study.

To maintain learning and ensure the health of students during the winter, the Department of Education and Training has issued an official dispatch directing affiliated educational institutions, the Department of Education and Training of districts and cities to organize homeroom teachers to coordinate with parents to implement measures to protect and keep students warm when they come to class. Review the entire system of school facilities such as doors, sliding doors, shutters, windows (classrooms, dormitories for schools with boarding and semi-boarding students) to cover them tightly from the wind and ensure light for studying.

Schools that organize boarding and semi-boarding students must provide and distribute personal items (blankets) to students to ensure they are adequate. Provide guidance to staff, teachers, and students on fire prevention and fighting safety measures; and safety against poisoning when using firewood, coal, and electricity for heating. Issue regulations, safety instructions, and monitor the use of electricity in student dormitories.

During days of extreme cold, freezing water, snowfall, and low temperatures, schools do not organize outdoor activities. School principals can allow students to take time off from school based on the actual weather conditions and have a plan to make up for lost time, and report to direct management levels.

Mr. Quang Van Lam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, said: From January 22 to 26, due to low temperatures, many schools have allowed students to stay home and have encouraged parents to take measures to prevent and combat the cold for their children at home. The whole province has 139 preschool, primary and secondary schools allowing more than 56,000 students to stay home to avoid the cold; high school students have 36 students staying home. After resuming school, schools will develop plans to make up for lost time in the school year plan.

Mobilizing social resources to have more conditions to prevent cold and take care of students' health during the cold season is something that many education and training departments and educational institutions in the province have done. However, schools are always proactive in ensuring classrooms, dormitories and educational activities so that students do not get cold and have their health affected.

Teacher Nguyen Quoc Cuong, Principal of Phieng Khoai Primary and Secondary School, Yen Chau District, shared: The school has 650 students, of which 148 are boarding students. In the morning and evening, it is colder here, with temperatures dropping to about 10 degrees Celsius. The school requires 100% of teachers to stay at school. Teachers regularly monitor and remind students to wear warm clothes and not to leave their rooms early in the morning or in the evening. Every night, teachers go to each room to check if the students are warm enough, and if any students have a cough or fever. As of January 26, the school's attendance rate reached over 99%.

Mr. Lo Trong Dai, Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Lan Commune, Sop Cop District, informed: In the 2023-2024 school year, the commune has over 3,100 students at three levels: preschool, primary school, and secondary school. The locality focuses on cold prevention and control, especially for preschool and primary school students. The commune coordinates with the district's professional agencies to direct schools to regularly update weather forecasts on mass media, and adjust school hours accordingly based on the actual situation. At the same time, propagate and remind parents to dress their children warmly before leaving home. Schools with boarding students who stay at school at noon must check their rooms, close the doors, and take measures to prevent drafts; provide enough blankets, mosquito nets, and foam for the floor; serve meals and hot drinks, ensuring adequate nutrition.

Given the current weather, schools are actively implementing measures to prevent and combat the cold for students. The task of ensuring students’ health is always taken seriously, along with teaching and learning.
