People Power Party (PPP) leader Han Dong-hoon said he would block the opposition's attempt to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over the declaration of martial law.
South Korea's ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon said on December 5 that the PPP will unite to block the opposition's impeachment resolution against President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to Yonhap.
Earlier, the main opposition Democratic Party and five other minor parties submitted a resolution to impeach President Yoon to the National Assembly after the leader declared martial law late on December 3. The National Assembly is expected to vote as early as December 6.
Opposition votes to impeach South Korean president after failed martial law declaration
"As the party leader, I will work to ensure that this impeachment resolution is not passed to prevent harm from sudden instability to the public and supporters," Han said at the party meeting.
He stressed that the decision was not to defend President Yoon's unconstitutional martial law. "Those responsible for destabilizing the public and causing harm through unconstitutional martial law, including the president, must be held strictly accountable," Han said, calling on Yoon to leave the PPP.

President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on the evening of December 3.
An impeachment resolution requires two-thirds of the parliament to pass. The opposition needs eight votes from the PPP to do so.
President Yoon Suk Yeol's sudden decision to declare martial law has shaken South Korean politics and is putting him at risk of losing his job. On the evening of December 3, he made a surprise speech on television and declared martial law, partly because the opposition had paralyzed the government . However, the majority of parliamentarians, including PPP lawmakers, immediately voted to nullify the president's decision.
In a related development, President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 5 accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun. Mr. Kim, who is believed to have proposed the declaration of martial law, submitted his resignation on December 4.
President Yoon also nominated retired four-star general Choi Byung-huk, currently South Korea's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, to replace Mr. Kim.
