On the evening of May 8, in the third match of Group B of the 32nd SEA Games men's football, the U22 Vietnam team won 2-1 against U22 Malaysia. Coach Troussier and his team won all 3 group stage matches to quickly qualify for the semi-finals before meeting U22 Thailand in the final match.

Before entering the match, U22 Malaysia was rated higher because they had better physical strength than the Vietnamese players. They also created pressure right after the ball rolled.
After the first few minutes of the match, in the 5th minute, Harith touched the ball with his hand in the penalty area, allowing U22 Vietnam to receive a penalty. On the free kick, Van Tung could not beat the Malaysian goalkeeper with his first shot, but Van Tung rushed in to finish the match, opening the score at 1-0.
After conceding the goal, Malaysia was forced to push their formation to play offensively. U22 Vietnam accepted being pressed right on their home field. In the heavy rain, the players had difficulty controlling the ball. The midfield area was often contested with bad passes from the opposing team.
During the attack in the 35th minute, Minh Trong ran down and crossed accurately for Van Tung to double the gap for the yellow star warriors.
However, the last minutes of the first half were a time of downtime for U22 Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Malaysian players continuously deployed high situations to take advantage of their physique.
In the 43rd minute, U22 Malaysia had a goal to shorten the score to 1-2 thanks to Mohamad Aliff after goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan's fumbled catch.
In the second half, coach Troussier chose a defensive style of play for U22 Vietnam early on to preserve the advantage until the end of the match. However, this gave Malaysia more space to attack.
However, while under a lot of pressure from the opponent, U22 Vietnam had an extra player when Safwan Mazlan had a dirty act and received a red card and had to leave the field.
Just a few minutes later, U22 Malaysia was down to 9 players. Najmudin Akmal fouled Thanh Nhan and received a second yellow card and had to leave the field.
Winning 2-1, U22 Vietnam officially entered the semi-finals of SEA Games 32 one round early after winning all the matches in the group stage. U22 Vietnam will have the final "procedural" match in the group stage against U22 Thailand at 7:00 p.m. on May 11.
