The Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City (DONRE) has just responded to comments and supported the proposal of the People's Committee of District 1 (HCMC) to use vacant land where projects have not been implemented to build temporary public toilets to serve residents and tourists .
Land plot No. 2-4-6 Hai Ba Trung can be handed over immediately for investment in building temporary public toilets.
The locations mentioned include the Tax Trade Center project land (135 Nguyen Hue Street); the Majestic Hotel expansion project (2-4-6 Nguyen Hue Street); the land at 8-12 Le Duan; the project land at 2-4-6 Hai Ba Trung Street and the project land at 8 Nguyen Trung Truc Street.
Among these areas, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment said that the land plots at 8-12 Le Duan and 2-4-6 Hai Ba Trung owned by the Land Fund Development Center (under the Department of Natural Resources and Environment) can be handed over immediately for investment in the construction of temporary public toilets. For the remaining locations, the People's Committee of District 1 needs to proactively work with the project owner to determine the specific locations for investment and new construction.
According to statistics, Ho Chi Minh City is a large city with more than 10 million people but only has more than 200 public toilets, causing a shortage and overload, especially in the central area, where many tourists come to visit.
Previously, the city has introduced many policies to develop and improve the quality of public toilets. Notably, in 2016, Ho Chi Minh City implemented a project to build 1,000 public toilets, but to date it has not been implemented.
Recently, District 1 authorities have persuaded 100 food, beverage, and tourism service stores to allow visitors to use the restrooms for free.
