Turn dragon fruit into a commodity
From the breakthrough program for the 2020 - 2025 term of the old Vu Minh commune on making dragon fruit a key commodity product, the Party Committee and the commune government focused on directing departments, branches and organizations to strengthen propaganda, change people's awareness and production habits from small-scale to commodity production. Prioritizing the development of dragon fruit, the Commune People's Committee directed the development of planning and implementation of development policies such as linking production and product consumption with units and enterprises; integrating national target programs to support seeds, fertilizers, technical training and application of cultivation processes. By 2024, the area of dragon fruit trees reached 18/15 hectares, equivalent to 120% compared to the plan of the term. The commune coordinated with NTC Technology Transfer Consulting Joint Stock Company to plant 6,736 hectares and take care of 6,517 hectares according to VietGAP standards in Lung Chang, Lung In, and Lung Rao hamlets.
Thanks to the right policy, the area, productivity and quality of dragon fruit products have increased year by year. Lung Chang stone dragon fruit products were assessed to meet 4-star OCOP standards by the end of 2024. This achievement affirms the position of Lung Chang dragon fruit in the market, increasing income and improving people's lives. Mr. Ly Kiem Son, a long-time dragon fruit grower in Lung Chang hamlet, shared: Thanks to the close guidance from the Party Committee and government, we, the people of Lung Chang, have boldly invested in dragon fruit. In particular, since Lung Chang stone dragon fruit met 4-star OCOP standards, consumption has become easier. This is a great motivation for people to continue to stick with and enrich their homeland.
Bamboo "opens the way" out of poverty
Recognizing the development potential of bamboo, Nguyen Binh commune (formerly The Duc commune) identified this as a key crop, playing a key role in the strategy for developing endemic agricultural commodities in the period of 2022 - 2025. With the goal of sustainable poverty reduction, the exploitation and development of bamboo is not only an economic solution but also a strategic direction, making the most of the advantages of local natural conditions and climate. The total area of bamboo in the commune is currently 206.3 hectares, in the hamlets of Tong Nga, Lung Noi, Phja Bo, Nam Bjoc, and Ban Nung. Lung Noi hamlet alone is a bright spot in the bamboo planting movement, with the largest bamboo planting area reaching 117.9 hectares. Up to now, the hamlet has 42 households persistently sticking with bamboo, constantly maintaining and expanding the area, increasing an average of about 2 hectares of new planting each year. The secret to Lung Noi’s success lies not only in the diligence and hard work of the people, but also in the application of planting and care techniques, as well as the initiative in finding markets for the products. The spirit of solidarity to overcome difficulties and the support from authorities at all levels have made the bamboo tree truly become the “golden tree” of Lung Noi hamlet in particular and Nguyen Binh commune in general.
Sharing the secret, Mr. Hoang Van Xuong, Head of Lung Noi Hamlet, said: Growing and exploiting bamboo poles has become the main source of income for many households in Lung Noi Hamlet. According to statistics, many households have an income of more than 70 million VND/year from selling bamboo poles. The stable income from bamboo has helped 5 households in the hamlet escape poverty, 21 households from poor households to near-poor households. The average income per capita has increased significantly, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of the people. Many households have built spacious houses, bought means of transport and have a more stable life.
However, to maintain sustainable development, strict management of exploitation and processing is needed to ensure no negative impact on the environment. At the same time, technical training for people also needs to be focused on to improve product quality and increase competitiveness in the market.
Change from breakthroughs
After 5 years of implementing the breakthrough goals in the Party Congress Resolution, the appearance of Nguyen Binh commune has changed dramatically. The program focuses on 3 main pillars: improving infrastructure, developing the economy and improving the cultural and social life of the people. To effectively implement the breakthrough content, special attention is paid to planning and planning management, demonstrated through the local government organizing annual conferences to publicize planning and land use plans, helping to establish order and discipline in planning, management and construction licensing. Projects are implemented in accordance with approved land use planning, new rural construction planning and general construction planning. The management of traffic safety corridors and urban order is also well directed. The irrigation system is invested, renovated and newly built, creating favorable conditions for agricultural production. Infrastructure works in the commune are maintained, repaired and upgraded according to the annual plan. Up to now, 25/25 hamlets and residential groups have roads that can be accessed by cars, ensuring convenience.
The breakthrough program also opens up a potential direction, focusing on exploiting and developing local crops and livestock. Thanks to the support of preferential loans, people have the opportunity to invest heavily in agricultural production and livestock farming, applying advanced techniques to improve productivity and product quality. In addition, the program also focuses on restoring and developing traditional handicrafts, not only creating more jobs but also contributing to preserving cultural identity. These efforts have brought positive changes to the local economy, reflected in the significant increase in per capita income, reaching nearly 30 million VND/year.
Public works such as schools, medical stations, and cultural houses have been invested in and upgraded to meet the cultural, educational , and health care needs of the people. These achievements are clear evidence of the wise leadership of the Party Committee and the consensus and joint efforts of the entire people of the commune in the process of building an increasingly prosperous and civilized homeland.
However, Nguyen Binh commune still faces some challenges, some targets have not been achieved compared to the resolution's target due to the small economic scale, limited resources, agriculture accounts for a large proportion while industry and services have not developed proportionally. The quality of education is uneven between regions, there is a shortage of IT and English teachers at primary level and subject teachers at secondary level. The issue of environmental protection is also becoming increasingly urgent due to the economic development process.
The breakthrough program shows the right direction, initially bringing positive results, creating new momentum for the socio-economic development of the locality. The commune focuses on solving bottlenecks and exploiting the local potential and advantages to the fullest. Strengthening propaganda and mobilization to create high consensus among the people; mobilizing all resources to invest in socio-economic development; focusing on improving the quality of human resources; strengthening inspection, supervision, and evaluation of the program's effectiveness and promptly adjusting shortcomings and limitations. With the solidarity and efforts of the entire Party Committee, government and people of the commune, the breakthroughs will achieve more success, making Nguyen Binh a rich, beautiful and civilized locality.
