Promoting sustainable forest management certification

Doan Hung is one of the localities with the largest forest and forestry land area in the province with over 13,000 hectares, accounting for nearly 50% of the district's natural land area. In recent times, Doan Hung has made efforts to implement many solutions to exploit and promote the strengths of forestry development, increase productivity, forest economic value, and improve people's income, including the assessment and certification of sustainable forest management (FSC).

Forest rangers propagate and mobilize people of Tay Coc commune to register for FSC certification to increase the economic value of forestry.

FSC certification brings many benefits to the people, increasing the value of wood and increasing income per unit area. However, the implementation process still faces many difficulties, the progress of forest certification is slow, not commensurate with the potential of the district. Up to now, the whole Doan Hung district has only about 300 hectares of large timber forests of forestry companies that have been granted FSC, and no area of ​​production forests of the people has been granted certificates.

The main reasons are that people's production practices, seed quality, investment and care processes do not meet forest management standards; the area of ​​production forests of people is small, the area of ​​forestry land without a certificate of land use rights is still common, causing difficulties for inspection and management...

With the goal of raising the level of planted forest wood, in 2024, Doan Hung district will promote the implementation of many solutions to support the granting of FSC certification for planted forest areas in the area. The district has coordinated and created conditions for Hoang Dai Vuong Company Limited to cooperate with households in 9 communes to implement the contents of granting FSC certification with a reviewed area of ​​about 1,800 hectares. The granting of FSC certification will help people's planted forest wood to be signed to purchase at a higher price than the market price, and processed wood products will be exported abroad.

Representative of the Northern Forest Development Cooperative in Phu Tho region (Hoang Dai Vuong Company Limited), Mr. Vu Van Hue informed: “The process of implementing sustainable forest certification in Doan Hung district has met with many favorable conditions. We have received the attention and support of authorities at all levels in mobilizing forest owners to register for the implementation of sustainable forest management models, and the support of the people. Up to now, the propaganda and dissemination work has been promoted, helping people to be aware of the practical benefits of planting forests according to FSC requirements, thanks to which the majority of households in the communes have pioneered in registering. At the same time, the production forest area of ​​the district is located in a low mountainous area, so it is convenient for the management and supervision of activities in compliance with sustainable forest management. We are continuing to coordinate to review maps and fieldwork to expand the area of ​​​​certification registration, moving towards establishing groups of households, cooperatives, and accelerating the implementation progress to complete the contents of the process. FSC as planned”.

In the process of implementing FSC certified forest development, in addition to local attention and close coordination between businesses and forest growers, the district Forest Protection Department is also one of the active and effective supporting forces in propaganda and mobilization work.

Comrade Tran Quoc Toan - Head of the Doan Hung District Forest Protection Department said: “Recognizing the effectiveness of forest production according to FSC standards on people's lives, we consider this one of the top priority tasks. The unit always assigns local officials to each plot and each area to guide forest owners to properly implement the principles, do a good job of fire prevention, fire fighting, forest protection, and explain to people to clearly understand the province's support policies for this program so that people can highly agree. The encouraging thing is that forest growers are very interested and proactive, actively participating in forest production according to the new standards. All of them want to increase productivity and output per unit area, while contributing to protecting the ecological environment and sustainable development".

Based on the awareness of the many benefits that FSC afforestation brings to the economy, business brand, environment, society... in the coming time, the district will continue to create conditions, attract businesses to invest, support forest growers in granting certificates. Along with that, improve productivity, value of planted forest wood along with protecting, preventing and fighting forest fires; expand the market for consuming planted forest products, form a chain of forest products, create stable output for planted forest products.
