Khao Mang is a highland commune with a complex terrain of hills and mountains, and a harsh climate in winter, so many areas of land can only be cultivated with one rice crop per year. In addition, the commune is inhabited by over 90% Mong ethnic people, with limited farming skills and a self-sufficient mindset that has been ingrained in the way of life for generations.
Through a long process of propaganda, mobilizing to change thinking, awareness and policies to support agricultural economic development, the Mong people here have promoted agricultural production towards commodities.
After the success of the model of growing yellow sugarcane on hilly land implemented by the former Yen Bai Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, for many years now, the people of Khao Mang commune have boldly replicated it.

Ms. Mua Thi Cha in Trong La village has 5,000 square meters of rice land, but due to lack of water, productivity and output are low. Therefore, Ms. Cha has switched to growing sugarcane.
Ms. Cha shared: “This is my 6th year growing sugarcane, so I have a good grasp of the techniques, experience in planting and caring for it. Last year, I harvested nearly 3,000 trees, selling for 13-14 thousand VND/tree, after deducting expenses, I made a profit of nearly 40 million VND. Moreover, sugarcane is easy to consume, even if there is more, it will still be sold out because the harvest time is near Tet, purchasing power increases.”
Mr. Giang A Dinh in Hang Chang Lu village has also boldly invested in commercial livestock farming after many years of small-scale farming.
Mr. Dinh shared: “In 2023, with support of 40 million VND from the province's policy, I was determined to borrow more capital from relatives to invest in renovating and upgrading barns and buying more breeding animals to develop a model of raising buffalo and cows on a scale of 10 or more in the direction of semi-grazing. Up to now, the herd has increased to 13 animals, I have more income to pay off debt and escape poverty."

In the 2021 - 2025 period alone, the commune has implemented 2 projects to support the development of production linked to the value chain associated with the consumption of pear products with an area of 17.2 hectares; angelica and purple cardamom products with an area of 60 hectares.
In addition, over 115 livestock farms in the direction of organic goods or specialties were supported according to the support policy in Resolution 69/2020/NQ-HDND, Resolution 05/2022/NQ-HDND of the People's Council of Yen Bai province (old) with a support amount of over 1.8 billion VND; supported 272 livestock households from capital sources of national target programs...
Thanks to that, up to now, Khao Mang has formed a sugarcane growing area of 25 hectares, worth over 2 billion VND; a mini-waxy corn growing area of 25 hectares, worth nearly 2 billion VND; a Seng cu rice growing area of 400 hectares, with a yield of 40 - 45 quintals/ha, worth 55 million VND/ha; over 100 commercial livestock farms, contributing to raising the total livestock herd to over 11,600 heads/year...
Agricultural products are gradually building their brands and are being purchased by traders from other provinces at good prices.

The story of Khao Mang is a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of economic thinking innovation. When products are sold at a good price, people have more income and their lives will change. By the end of 2024, the poverty rate in the commune will decrease to 42.87%, and by 2025 it is expected to be 33.79%, with an average poverty reduction rate of 9.61% per year.
