Nvidia's AI chip empire is about to face a heavy blow from Samsung

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to expand its reach, appearing in a wide variety of products and services. Smartphones are the latest frontier, with AI features becoming more and more common.

However, these features have been limited to high-end devices due to the demanding performance requirements of AI. On the other hand, using expensive and powerful processors on every phone for current AI tasks is impractical.

Therefore, to address this challenge, Korean tech giant Samsung has developed a “dedicated AI accelerator chip” solution, by planning to launch a new AI chip called Mach-1 in 2025.

Samsung recently announced Galaxy AI alongside its flagship Galaxy S24 family. This includes a ChatGPT-like language model, and more AI tasks.

However, due to the high performance demands of AI, this feature is limited to select models. Even powerful processors like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 may struggle with some future AI applications. To address this challenge, Samsung is working on its own AI accelerator chip called Mach-1.

Samsung has begun efforts to develop chips targeting a launch in 2025. This is an important first step, and future iterations of such could lead to significant advances in the technology market.

In addition, Samsung plans to not only use this AI chip internally, but also market and supply it to other tech companies, which will put Samsung in direct competition with Nvidia.

After Nvidia’s overwhelming success in the AI ​​chip space over the past two years, it’s no surprise that tech giant Samsung is looking to enter the space. Nvidia’s dominance in AI chip technology is evident, with tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Amazon, and Google relying on its chips to power their operations, generating billions of dollars in revenue.
