According to the reported plan, the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway project has a total length of about 144km (preliminarily expected to be extended compared to the planned route by about 8km due to very difficult terrain conditions at Violak Pass and Mang Den Pass).
Total investment over 44,000 billion VND
The starting point at Km 0+000 intersects with the North-South Expressway in the East, in Duc Pho District, Quang Ngai Province. The ending point intersects with the North-South Expressway in the West, in Kon Tum City, Kon Tum Province.
The proposed expressway has a scale of 4 expressway lanes according to the planning, highway standards of class 80 - 100, design speed of 80 - 100 km/h. The total preliminary investment is over 44,300 billion VND.
In which, localities are responsible for arranging capital for site clearance work. The central budget arranges construction and remaining costs.
If implemented according to current regulations, the project is expected to be approved for investment policy in October 2025, approved for investment project in May 2026, start construction in December 2026, and complete in December 2029.
If implemented under a special mechanism (similar to the North-South Eastern Expressway project), the project will be approved for investment policy in October 2025, approved for investment project in April 2026, start construction in October 2026, and complete in September 2029.
Connecting Laos and Cambodia border gates with the North-South vertical axes
Affirming that the investment in the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway is necessary, according to the Ministry of Construction , the invested project will form the highest speed, shortest, and most convenient road to connect Quang Ngai province with Kon Tum province; connect the border gates of Laos and Cambodia in the Central Highlands region with the North - South vertical axes, connecting with coastal economic zones of Vietnam.
In case the Prime Minister decides to assign the locality as the governing body, the Ministry of Construction will direct relevant agencies to hand over the above preliminary research results to the locality to implement the next steps.
The Quang Ngai - Kon Tum Expressway plays an important role as a traffic axis, connecting the Central Coast region with the Central Highlands, specifically from Quang Ngai to Kon Tum. This helps form the Bo Y - Kon Tum - Mang Den - Quang Ngai economic corridor, creating favorable conditions for trade, transport of goods and economic development between regions.
If built, the project will maximize the advantages of geographical location and natural conditions of the two localities, especially the potential for tourism development in Kon Tum province (Mang Den National Tourist Area), seaport potential, tourism in Quang Ngai province (Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province will become a center for sea and island tourism).
The completion of the expressway will create a strong driving force for the socio-economic development of the two provinces of Quang Ngai and Kon Tum, helping to reduce transportation costs and shorten travel time, thereby promoting the development of industry, agriculture and services.
