COVID-19 epidemic today: Infections increase, Vietnam monitors new variant

Regarding the COVID-19 epidemic situation today , the Ministry of Health said that from 4:00 p.m. on August 13 to 4:00 p.m. on August 14, the whole country recorded 20 cases, an increase compared to the previous day.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, Vietnam has had 11,622,238 infections, ranking 13th out of 231 countries and territories, while with the rate of infections per 1 million people, Vietnam ranks 120th out of 231 countries and territories (on average, there are 117,451 infections per 1 million people).

During the day, 1 more patient was announced to be cured, bringing the total number of cured cases to 10,640,388. The number of patients currently on oxygen is 1 case.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 in Vietnam to date is 43,206, accounting for 0.4% of the total number of infections.

Recently, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the organization is monitoring several new SARS-CoV-2 variants. This variant is EG.5, which is spreading in the US and the UK, and is identified as a sub-lineage of Omicron.

Previously, in May, when officially declaring the COVID-19 pandemic no longer a global health emergency, WHO still emphasized that the epidemic was not over yet.

In Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Health, the number of COVID-19 cases has fluctuated around a few dozen cases per day since the beginning of August. At the same time, the number of COVID-19 vaccinations has also decreased. In the current context, Vietnam continues to closely monitor WHO information on the spread and virulence of new variants.

Since July 20, no additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in our country. Currently, the whole country has administered more than 266.5 million doses of vaccine. Following the direction of the Government , the Ministry of Health is completing the dossier to move COVID-19 from group A infectious disease to group B.
