From long-standing tradition to national brand
Phu Yen is not only known for its sophisticated leather shoe products, but also famous for its history of craft villages associated with continuous learning and creativity. According to Mr. Nguyen Luong Duc, Chairman of Phu Yen Leather and Footwear Association, the shoemaking profession here originated in the early 20th century when Mr. Nguyen Luong Nghe - a son of the village learned the craft on Trang Tien Street (Hanoi).
With his skillful hands and diligence, Mr. Nghe has built a reputation, passing on his craft to many generations of skilled workers in the village. Since then, Phu Yen leather shoes have not only spread throughout Vietnam but also created a unique feature in the country's handicraft culture.

Transform with modern technology
Today, Phu Yen craft village not only preserves traditional values but also strongly applies technology to production, turning this place into an industrial center supporting the leather and footwear industry. Manual steps such as cutting, sewing, and nailing are now replaced by cutting machines, stamping machines, and planing machines, helping to increase productivity and improve product quality.
Many manufacturing facilities have organized production in a specialized direction, dividing each family or group of workers into separate stages such as processing the sole, shoe body or accessories. The finished product is assembled from these details, ensuring uniform standards and saving costs.
Currently, more than 100 establishments in the village have registered exclusive trademarks, creating a distinct brand for Phu Yen leather shoe products, opening up opportunities to access demanding international markets such as the EU and the US.
With more than 500 households participating in production, Phu Yen craft village is attracting thousands of workers from within and outside the locality, with an average income of 8-10 million VND/month. Current capacity reaches about 1,800 pairs of shoes per day, meeting both domestic and export markets.
Not only providing finished products, craft villages also play an important role in the supply chain of supporting industries for the footwear industry. The production facilities for components and accessories here are gradually reducing their dependence on imported raw materials, thereby increasing the industry’s autonomy and competitiveness.
Sustainable development orientation
Faced with increasingly high market demands, especially green and sustainable standards, Phu Yen is actively improving production, aiming to “green” the entire process. The factories here not only apply energy-saving technology but also improve raw materials, minimize environmental impacts, and meet the strict standards of demanding markets.
In addition, intellectual property registration and collective brand building help Phu Yen leather shoe products build a solid reputation, thereby expanding the export market. This is an important foundation for the craft village to continue to affirm its core role in the leather and footwear support industry.
Phu Yen craft village is not only a bright spot in the leather and footwear industry but also a symbol of innovation and sustainable development. With the orientation of increasing product value, optimizing supply chains and promoting exports, this place is playing a strategic role in bringing the Vietnamese leather and footwear industry further on the world map. Looking to the future, Phu Yen is not only a place to preserve the quintessence of handicrafts but also a launching pad for the supporting industry, contributing to enhancing the position of the Vietnamese leather and footwear industry in the global market. With its potential and continuous efforts, this craft village will certainly continue to be the pride of the country in the journey of economic development and international integration.
