With the attention of the Party and the State, the infrastructure system in Truong Sa Special Zone, Khanh Hoa Province has been invested synchronously and effectively. Not only is it an outpost island, Truong Sa Special Zone is also a real fulcrum for fishermen to confidently go out to sea, stick to the sea, contributing to protecting the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

“Safe zone” in the storm
For a long time, amidst the vast sea, Truong Sa Special Zone has become a “safe zone” for fishermen fishing at sea whenever there is a storm. Recently, in the face of the complicated and unpredictable developments of storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi), forces in Truong Sa Special Zone have proactively deployed many measures to support and help fishermen in the Truong Sa archipelago.

More than 300 fishing boats, with over 3,000 fishermen, were guided to take shelter from typhoon Kalmaegi in the harbors on the islands of the Truong Sa Special Zone. Here, fishermen were supported with over 20,000 liters of fresh water, many essential necessities and were arranged temporary accommodation on the island during the time affected by the typhoon. Officers and soldiers Navy also regularly visit, encourage, help people feel secure to avoid storms.
Talking to us, Mr. Le Thang Buc, captain of fishing boat 97569TS said: “Navy officers and soldiers were very enthusiastic in supporting us in towing the boat, providing fresh water, food and provisions when we took shelter at the port. Thanks to the help of the army, we were able to overcome storm No. 13, both people and vehicles were safe.”
| According to Mr. Pham Thanh Liem, Chairman of the People's Committee of Truong Sa Special Zone, with the spirit of "accompanying fishermen to go out to sea and stick to the sea", during times of rough seas or storms, the forces in Truong Sa Special Zone have regularly supported fishermen by providing food, fresh water, medical care, and ensuring a stable life (when the storm lasts). Rescue forces and vehicles are always ready to mobilize in case of emergency, not to be passive or surprised. | |
Health "fulcrum" for fishermen
Long fishing days at sea always pose many potential risks to the health of fishermen. In such conditions, the Military Medical Force and the infirmary system on the islands of the Truong Sa Special Zone have always been the "support" for the health of fishermen.
Not long ago, while exploiting seafood in the Truong Sa sea area, fisherman Nguyen Van Lai (in Binh Son commune, Quang Ngai province), a crew member of fishing boat QNg 90640 TS, suddenly experienced symptoms of fatigue, numbness and weakness on the right side of his body, difficulty speaking, and headache. At At Truong Sa Island Infirmary, after diagnosing Mr. Lai with a stroke and paralysis of the right side of his body due to a cerebral infarction, the military doctors and nurses devoted themselves to treating him and helping him gradually recover.

Previously, while working on fishing boat BD 96888 TS fishing near Thuyen Chai Island, Truong Sa Special Zone, fisherman Vinh Van Non (in Hoai Nhon Ward, Gia Lai Province) was crushed by a stone crusher and his right hand was crushed. Mr. Non was taken to Truong Sa Island Infirmary by the fishing boat for emergency treatment. After first aid, doctors and nurses on Truong Sa Island consulted with leading experts from Military Hospital 175 to provide timely emergency care to the patient.
After a week of treatment and dedicated care on the island, Mr. Non's health has recovered... Fisherman Vinh Van Non shared: "The Navy treated him completely free of charge, ensuring he received food, medicine, and was very attentive and safe. My family and I are very grateful to the doctors, nurses, officers, and soldiers on Truong Sa island."

Mr. Nguyen Van Lai and Mr. Vinh Van Non are two of thousands of fishermen who have been treated and provided health care by the Military Medical Force on the islands of the Truong Sa Special Zone. It is known that the infirmary system in the Truong Sa Special Zone has been built spaciously, with full functional rooms and many modern machines for intensive emergency care such as: Ventilators, portable ventilators, drainage systems, anesthesia and resuscitation systems, new generation ultrasound machines, X-ray machines, electrocardiogram machines, etc.
In fact, many serious and very serious cases such as: multiple trauma, chest and abdominal trauma, traumatic brain injury, maxillofacial trauma, septic shock, multiple organ failure, etc. have been consulted online by doctors and nurses with leading experts of Military Hospital 175 for timely treatment.
Support fishermen with practical work
Implementing Resolution 36-NQ/TW of the 12th Party Central Committee on the strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, with the attention of the Party and the State, the system of ship locks and fishery service centers in Truong Sa Special Zone has been built synchronously. Currently, 4 ship locks are maintained in the Truong Sa archipelago on Song Tu Tay, Da Tay, Sinh Ton and Truong Sa islands. These ship locks have become reliable storm shelters for fishermen in the process of going offshore to catch seafood and affirming the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
Typically, at the Truong Sa Island Technical Logistics Service Center, in recent years, the unit has provided fishermen with fuel, food, necessities at the listed prices of the State on the mainland; provided free fresh water; produced and supplied ice; provided free wharf and anchorage services; arranged accommodation and meals for fishermen to take shelter from storms; supported, cared for, and dispensed free medicine. In particular, the unit also purchased and transported exploited and farmed seafood products to the mainland for fishermen at agreed prices; fishermen coming to the island enjoy cultural and spiritual services organized by the unit... This helps people reduce costs and increase income after each sea trip.

During the time when fishermen take shelter from storms or repair and fix problems, Navy officers and soldiers also regularly propagate. Directive 45/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister on a number of urgent tasks and solutions to address the European Commission's warnings on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; encouraging and guiding fishermen to properly implement regulations on fishing at sea... Thereby, contributing to promoting the role of fishermen in protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
Mr. Tran Van Dung, captain of fishing boat PY 90009TS in Dak Lak province, shared: “Previously, fishing boats around the Truong Sa archipelago, if they encountered a storm or ran out of fuel or had technical problems, had no choice but to return to shore. Now, we can go to the harbors to avoid storms, make minor repairs, buy fuel at the same price as on the mainland, get free fresh water, sell seafood... Everyone is confident and at ease staying at sea.”
| It is known that from 2023 to now, the fishing ports and service centers in Truong Sa archipelago have arranged for thousands of fishing boats to take shelter from storms and bad weather; provided tens of thousands of liters of fuel at the same price as the mainland; rescued more than 400 fishing boats with nearly 2,000 fishermen; repaired and fixed damage to nearly 200 boats; provided over 140 tons of food and nearly 2,200 cubic meters of fresh water; examined and provided medicine to more than 10,000 fishermen;... | |
With specific and practical support methods, the system of ship locks and fishery service centers in Truong Sa Special Zone has truly become a "common home" and a support for fishermen. Not only does it make an important contribution to ensuring the safety of fishermen's lives and property, the system of ship locks and fishery service centers in Truong Sa Special Zone also helps fishermen feel more confident in participating in developing the marine economy and protecting the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
