Dien Bien continues to have a 4.0 magnitude earthquake, widespread shaking

After a 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook Dien Bien this afternoon, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake followed, causing panic among people living in the epicenter but causing no casualties.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences , Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has just issued a notice of another earthquake in Dien Bien.

Accordingly, at 14:16:04 on May 16, an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred at the coordinates (21.735 degrees North latitude, 103.133 degrees East longitude), with a focal depth of about 10 km. The earthquake occurred in Muong Cha district, Dien Bien province. Natural disaster risk level 0.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor this earthquake.

The shaking that lasted for a few seconds surprised and frightened many people in Dien Bien Phu City and Tuan Giao, Muong Ang, and Muong Cha districts.

According to Vietnam's classification, an earthquake of magnitude 5 is considered moderate and can cause moderate to severe damage to poorly designed structures.

In the past 100 years, the two biggest earthquakes in Vietnam both occurred in Dien Bien.

In 1935, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurred with its epicenter in the south of Dien Bien basin and in 1983 a 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred with its epicenter in Tuan Giao district. Fortunately, both of these earthquakes did not cause much damage because at that time there were not many modern constructions, mainly hills and mountains.
