Arriving at Nhon Mai village - the center of the commune, we were really surprised by the fact that amidst the hills, many newly built houses were spacious, with green and red corrugated iron roofs mixed with traditional tiled roofs, in front of the yard or at the gable of the house were antenna dishes pointing up to the sky. Many houses provided services, shops, opened rice and corn mills... The residents gathered along both sides of the road like a small neighborhood.
Nhon Mai received investment from the National Target Program on New Rural Development, the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, along with the active support of officers and soldiers of Nhon Mai Border Guard Station... Thanks to that, the people's lives have been greatly improved, all villages have electricity, almost every house has a motorbike, and audio-visual equipment.
Mr. Lu Ngoc Tinh, Chairman of Nhon Mai Commune
Visiting Mr. Kha Duong Tien, former Party Secretary and Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, after a cup of hot tea, knowing that I would go to Huoi Co village, he proudly said: "Huoi Co is now very different from the past, not like the time when we went there to build a movement to encourage learning. Roads are easy to travel, people's lives are now much better."
Having said that, he walked quickly out to the yard, intending to take his motorbike to the gate to go with me to visit Huoi Co village. Seeing that, the commune chairman Lu Ngoc Tinh spoke up: "We will go down to the commune later and then take a car, sir."
The change in Nhon Mai is easily recognizable, the transportation system from the commune center to the villages has been opened, many routes have been concreted, there are bridges over streams to help people travel conveniently and safely. Roads in Nhon Mai, Na Hy, Na Lot, Co Ha, Huoi Co, Xoi Voi, Tham Tham, Xa Mat villages have been concreted, schools, medical stations have been solidly built; the commune People's Committee headquarters is also under construction, only about 2 months from now it will be handed over and put into use.
Commune Chairman Lu Ngoc Tinh said: The commune is in a particularly difficult situation, with 12 villages and hamlets. In the past, the commune has received investment from many programs and projects such as: National Target Program on New Rural Development, National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period, with the active support of officers and soldiers of Nhon Mai Border Guard Station... Thanks to that, the people's lives have been greatly improved, all villages have electricity, almost every house has a motorbike, and audio-visual equipment.
New development direction
In the story about the shift in crop and livestock structure, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lu Ngoc Tinh commune added: The commune has a lot of potential, especially in developing the forest economy. In previous years, the district has piloted passion fruit cultivation in Huoi Co and Tham Tham, initially showing effectiveness, bringing high income and helping people in these two villages escape poverty.
Hearing Chairman Lu Ngoc Tinh say that, I remembered that about 5-6 years ago, Huoi Co village was chosen by the district to build the model of "Bright spot of the border area" and invested capital for people to grow passion fruit. In those years, the annual income of the village reached over 20 billion VND. However, in the following years, passion fruit trees often got sick, many leading experts came here to study but could not overcome it.
Faced with this situation, the commune switched from growing passion fruit to growing ginger, and now high-yield cassava has become the main crop replacing passion fruit and ginger. The whole commune currently has 300 hectares of high-yield cassava. Households growing high-yield cassava all have an annual income of 50 to 100 million VND, with the exception of Mr. Va Ba Gia's household in Tham Tham village, which has an income of nearly 200 million VND.
In addition to investing in cassava cultivation, people also invest in raising large livestock and digging ponds to raise fish. Mong people in Huoi Co, Huoi Man, Pha Mut and Tham Tham villages also invest in growing peach trees on an area of nearly 30 hectares. Mr. Va Khua Do, Head of Huoi Co village, said: “The Mong people here are all diligent and hardworking. After abandoning passion fruit trees, we focused on growing ginger, peach trees, high-yield cassava and raising large livestock. Now, the cassava area is nearly 40 hectares, peach trees are over 18 hectares and there are nearly 400 buffaloes, cows and more than 1,000 black chickens. The average income per capita is currently about 40 million VND/year.”
Before leaving Nhon Mai, Mr. Va Ba Tinh, Vice Chairman of Nhon Mai Commune People's Committee invited us to visit Nha Vang waterfall and join in a cultural exchange with the Nhon Mai Village Folk Song and Dance Club. Looking at the cheerful faces, the rhythmic footsteps of the Thai ethnic people, the innocent and naive smiles of the children, I felt that the new life in this border area was changing every day.
