Upon arriving at Nhon Mai village – the center of the commune – we were truly surprised to see many newly built, spacious houses amidst the surrounding hills and mountains. The houses featured a mix of green and red corrugated iron roofs alongside traditional tiled roofs, with satellite dishes pointing towards the sky in front of the yards or at the gables. Many houses offered services, ran shops, or operated rice and corn milling businesses. The residents clustered along both sides of the road like a small neighborhood.
Nhon Mai has received investment from the National Target Program for New Rural Development, the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the National Target Program for Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, along with the active support of officers and soldiers of the Nhon Mai Border Guard Station… Thanks to this, the lives of the people have improved significantly; all villages have electricity, almost every household has a motorbike, and has audio-visual equipment.”
Mr. Lu Ngoc Tinh, Chairman of Nhon Mai Commune
Visiting Mr. Kha Duong Tien, former Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, after a cup of hot tea, knowing that I would be going to Huoi Co village, he proudly said: "Huoi Co is very different now than it used to be, nothing like when we went there to build the education promotion movement. The roads are easy to travel on, and the lives of the people are much better now."
Having said that, he strode briskly out into the yard, intending to take his motorbike out to the gate to go with me to visit Huồi Cọ village. Seeing this, the Chairman of the commune, Lữ Ngọc Tinh, said, "We'll go down to the commune office later and then take a car, sir."
The most noticeable change in Nhon Mai is the improved transportation system connecting the commune center to the villages. Many routes have been paved with concrete, and bridges have been built across streams, making travel easier and safer for the villagers. Roads within the villages of Nhon Mai, Na Hy, Na Lot, Co Ha, Huoi Co, Xoi Voi, Tham Tham, and Xa Mat have been concreted; schools and health stations have been built solidly; and the commune's People's Committee headquarters is also under construction and will be completed and put into use in about two months.
Chairman Lu Ngoc Tinh of the commune said: "The commune is classified as a particularly disadvantaged area, with 12 villages. Over the past period, the commune has received investment from many programs and projects such as: the National Target Program for New Rural Development, the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas giai đoạn 2021-2025, along with the active support of officers and soldiers of the Nhon Mai Border Guard Post… Thanks to this, the lives of the people have improved significantly. All villages have electricity, and almost every household owns a motorbike and audio-visual equipment."
New development direction
In the story about the restructuring of crop and livestock production, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lu Ngoc Tinh commune added: The commune has many potentials, especially in developing the hill and forest economy. In previous years, the district piloted passion fruit cultivation in Huoi Co and Tham Tham villages, which initially proved effective, bringing high income and helping people in these two villages escape poverty.
Hearing Chairman Lu Ngoc Tinh's words, I recalled that about 5-6 years ago, Huoi Co village was selected by the district to build a "Bright Spot in the Border Region" model and received investment capital for the villagers to grow passion fruit. In those years, the village's annual income reached over 20 billion VND. However, in subsequent years, the passion fruit plants were frequently affected by disease, and many leading experts came here to study the problem but were unable to find a solution.
Faced with this situation, the commune switched from passion fruit cultivation to ginger farming, and now high-yield cassava has become the main crop replacing passion fruit and ginger. The entire commune currently has 300 hectares of high-yield cassava. Households growing high-yield cassava all have an annual income of 50 to 100 million VND, with exceptional cases such as the family of Mr. Va Ba Gia in Tham Tham village earning nearly 200 million VND.
Besides investing in cassava cultivation, the people also invest in raising livestock and digging ponds for fish farming. The Mong ethnic people in the villages of Huoi Co, Huoi Man, Pha Mut, and Tham Tham have also invested in planting peach trees on nearly 30 hectares. Mr. Va Khua Do, head of Huoi Co village, said: “The Mong people here are all diligent and hardworking. After abandoning passion fruit cultivation, we focused on planting ginger, peach trees, high-yield cassava, and raising livestock. Now, the cassava area is nearly 40 hectares, peach trees cover over 18 hectares, and we have nearly 400 buffaloes and cows, and more than 1,000 black chickens. The average per capita income is currently about 40 million VND/year.”
Before leaving Nhon Mai, Mr. Va Ba Tinh, Vice Chairman of the Nhon Mai Commune People's Committee, invited us to visit Nha Vang Waterfall and participate in a cultural exchange with the Nhon Mai Folk Song and Dance Club. Seeing the cheerful faces and rhythmic steps of the Thai ethnic people, and the innocent smiles of the children, I felt that life in this border region is changing day by day.
