Strategic thinking associated with solving "national problems"
According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the development strategy of Vietnamese technology enterprises like CMC needs to be linked to national goals. “Strategic thinking is not just the company’s own strategy, but the ability to see the connections between enterprises and the Government, Party, and State to create driving force together” – he said. It is in deeply participating in solving national problems such as digital infrastructure, urban operations, improving the efficiency of the public service apparatus, developing science and technology and innovation that enterprises become great.
However, Minister Hung also encouraged businesses not to copy the successful models of large corporations, but to find their own path because "no one succeeds by going back on the old path."
The core of competition lies in the product, not just in the technology.
The rate of converting research results into commercial products in Vietnam is still low, a major bottleneck that causes many units to invest heavily in research but "stop halfway". However, according to the Minister, new products are what bring value, helping businesses create competitive advantages.
With CMC, the Minister orients businesses to develop in a different and specialized direction, focusing on areas that large corporations have not yet deeply exploited, such as specialized chips, IoT or specific products, to create sustainable competitive advantages.
Global aspirations and the role of core technology
According to Minister Hung, the outsourcing model, although generating revenue, cannot be a strategic pillar to create long-term advantages. Outsourcing should only be considered as “seed capital” for businesses to accumulate financial resources and experience, from which to invest in core technology and their own products. If they only stop at outsourcing, businesses will find it difficult to build a Vietnamese technology brand in the international arena.
To break through and become a global company, technology enterprises like CMC must master products, develop core technologies and expand innovation space through strategic spin-off companies, attract new students to schools to continuously create innovation resources...
Choosing a field and culture of "going all the way"
When faced with major technological choices such as artificial intelligence (AI) or semiconductors, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung affirmed that the question of "what to choose" is not as important as "whether or not you dare to do it to the end".
For a company of CMC’s size, AI becomes a natural choice if it has a clear data, product, and market strategy. Semiconductors, although a large field, do not necessarily have to start with billion-dollar projects; businesses can absolutely choose suitable segments such as design, IP, testing, or IoT chips, as long as they have the determination and resources to go the long way. AI and semiconductors have a close relationship: AI always exists semiconductors, and semiconductors increasingly need AI to optimize design and production.
In short, a sustainable development strategy for Vietnamese technology enterprises requires a strategic vision that is closely linked to the country's development goals, while turning knowledge into products, ideas into values, and aspirations into reality.
