China's CCTV reported that Typhoon Matmo made landfall in Guangdong province this afternoon. The National Meteorological Center of China recorded Typhoon Matmo with winds of more than 150 km/h.
Businesses, construction sites and public transport were forced to halt operations in coastal cities such as Haikou, Wenchang, Zhanjiang and Maoming. Haikou Meilan International Airport cancelled all incoming and outgoing flights from 11pm on October 4.
Beihai City, Guangxi Province, also announced today that it would suspend work, school and traffic activities. According to CCTV, Typhoon Matmo caused sea levels to rise at a port in Maoming this morning, leading to serious flooding risks. Chinese authorities have evacuated 197,000 people on Hainan Island and 150,000 in Guangdong Province.
All fishing vessels have been asked to return to safe anchorage. Coastal cities have been urged to step up measures to guard against rising waters, flash floods and landslides.

Typhoon Matmo entered China just as the country was on an eight-day national holiday from October 1. An estimated 2.36 billion trips were made, a 3.2 percent increase on the same period last year.
CCTV quoted meteorological experts calling on people to be vigilant, as Typhoon Matmo will seriously affect traffic and tourism during the National Day holiday.
The storm is expected to weaken after making landfall, but heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue until October 6 in Hainan and parts of Guangdong and Guangxi, the China Meteorological Center said.
Experts have stressed that the appearance of two consecutive storms in a short period of time can create a "storm-on-storm" effect, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides. Guangxi Province and Hainan Island are facing a double challenge of both overcoming the consequences of the old storm and responding to the new one.
Earlier, Typhoon Matmo swept through the Philippines on October 3, causing severe flooding in many areas. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development of Isabela province, 8,052 people, equivalent to 2,634 households, had to be evacuated. In Aurorarong province, 21,340 people had to take shelter from the storm at evacuation centers. The provincial government had to urgently distribute relief goods and necessities.
Heavy rains from Typhoon Matmo have caused flooding in many cities. Dredging and pumping work is underway in flood-prone areas. Life in areas devastated by Typhoon Matmo has been disrupted. Many families have had to leave their homes to seek shelter while floodwaters continue to rise, causing property damage.
