According to Mr. Le Trung Thanh, Director of the Construction Materials Department ( Ministry of Construction ), the total revenue of the construction materials industry accounts for approximately 11% of the national GDP.

On the morning of November 9th, the Vietnam Building Materials Association held a seminar titled "Developing a Modern and Sustainable Building Materials Industry in Vietnam." The seminar affirmed that the production of building materials is one of the important industries, contributing to the creation of infrastructure to meet the socio -economic development needs of the country.

At the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep, Director of the Institute of Building Materials (Ministry of Construction), stated that the building materials industry has made significant progress in production capacity in recent years. Prior to 2010, many key products in Vietnam, such as clinker, various types of tiles, sanitary ware, and construction glass, still had to be imported to meet domestic construction needs.

To date, construction material manufacturers have basically met the needs of construction and infrastructure development nationwide, with many products entering the export market such as clinker, energy-saving glass, ceramic tiles, paving stones, sanitary ware, industrial lime, etc.

" These achievements not only help increase output and production efficiency but also contribute to enhancing the industry's position in the international market ," said Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep.

According to Mr. Hiep, statistics on the production and consumption capacity of the construction materials industry show that many sectors in our country have experienced remarkable development in production and consumption. The production capacity of some important construction materials such as cement, ceramics, and construction glass has increased from several tens to hundreds of times after 40 years of development.

Furthermore, the value of construction materials production has continuously increased, and the contribution of the construction materials manufacturing industry to GDP has become increasingly significant. By the end of 2023, the contribution of the construction materials manufacturing industry to Vietnam's GDP accounted for approximately 6-7%.

Agreeing with this viewpoint, Mr. Le Trung Thanh – Director of the Construction Materials Department (Ministry of Construction) emphasized: " The Vietnamese construction materials industry plays a very important role in the process of national construction and development. In the past 10 years, the total production capacity of key construction materials in Vietnam has grown to approximately 120 million tons of cement, 830 million m² of ceramic tiles, 26 million sanitary ware products, 330 million m² of construction glass, 20 billion fired clay bricks, and 12 billion non-fired bricks (standard) ."

In particular, the production of cement and ceramic tiles is among the world's top producers. The quality of Vietnamese construction materials meets international standards. The technological level, production organization, business practices, and environmental standards of Vietnam's construction materials industry are among the best in ASEAN countries. The total annual revenue of the construction materials industry is estimated at approximately US$47 billion, accounting for about 11% of the national GDP (of which, construction materials excluding construction steel account for approximately VND 600 trillion (equivalent to over US$24 billion), representing nearly 6% of the national GDP), making a significant contribution to state revenue and creating jobs for millions of workers.

However, the Director of the Department of Building Materials frankly admitted that in recent years, the Vietnamese building materials industry has faced many difficulties. Both consumption and revenue have decreased, leading to the risk of production and business stagnation for enterprises, job losses for workers, and impacts on socio-economic development. This is also a concern for the Government and relevant ministries and agencies in their efforts to find solutions to overcome the difficulties facing this sector.

However, from the perspective of the State management agency in this field, Mr. Thanh believes that the current difficulties facing the construction materials industry in a highly competitive market mechanism also present an opportunity to assess the capabilities and effectiveness of Vietnamese construction material businesses and products.

In this situation, construction material businesses, scientific and training organizations, professional associations, and central and local government agencies must all focus on effectively implementing solutions in accordance with the Prime Minister's directives on mechanisms, policies, product consumption markets, investment, application of science and technology, environmental protection, and international cooperation to improve the productivity, quality, and competitiveness of construction materials products both domestically and internationally.

Therefore, " The construction materials industry, with its capabilities proven through many difficult periods alongside the country's development, will certainly overcome current difficulties and challenges, adapt well to market mechanisms, the fluctuations of the global economy, and the development of science and technology to rise to the level worthy of the goals set out in the Vietnam Construction Materials Development Strategy for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 ," Mr. Thanh affirmed.
