Recently , many banks have sent reminders to customers to update their documents and biometric data to avoid transaction interruptions . Some banks are open outside of business hours to support customers ; others are offering cash promotions to encourage customers to update their biometrics .
According to the State Bank's regulations, from January 1, 2025, payment account holders/bank card holders who have not updated their biometrics will have their online money transfer, bill payment, phone top-up transactions suspended; withdrawals and money transfers at ATMs suspended... Customers also need to update their identification documents if these documents have expired.
Launch promotions , increase transaction time
In order to help customers avoid interruptions in transactions when the State Bank's regulations take effect, many banks have recently sent notices recommending that customers quickly complete the verification of the identity documents and biometric information of the account holder/card holder. Some banks also set up reminders every time users log in to their e-banking applications to urge customers.
At Vietcombank , this bank not only sends notifications but also opens transaction points outside of business hours from November 23, 2024 to January 15, 2025 to support customers in updating biometrics and expired identity document information. Specifically, from Monday to Friday, the bank is open for transactions from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday is open for transactions from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. According to a representative of Vietcombank Phu Yen, customers can update biometrics and identity document information directly on the VCB Digibank digital banking application or bring a valid ID card/citizen ID card with a chip to Vietcombank's transaction points for support.
Some other banks have launched promotional programs to encourage customers to update their biometrics. Typically, from now until December 31, 2024, HDBank customers who complete the biometric information and generate at least one active transaction will receive VND 20,000 in their accounts. Or MBBank has launched a program to give cash every week to customers who successfully update their biometrics on the MB app from November 25 to December 15, 2024.
“Customers only need to successfully update their citizen identification information on the MB app during the promotion period. Every week, after customers complete the update, they will share the cash gift of that week. The prize is randomly divided into valuable cash gifts…”, said Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Quyen, Director of MB Phu Yen Services.
Do it early to avoid overload and congestion .
Biometric authentication requirements will be applied from July 1, 2024, for transfers from VND 10 million/time or from VND 20 million/day, transactions on new devices... From January 1, 2025, this regulation will be tightened one step further when requiring all customers to update their biometrics to be able to make online transactions.
According to Mr. Tran Van Tri, Deputy Director of the State Bank of Vietnam, Phu Yen branch, in the era of technology 4.0, more and more methods of fraud and account forgery appear, at which time protecting personal information is extremely important. Updating biometrics will help people secure their accounts, reducing the risk of fraud and forgery. This not only increases the level of security in financial transactions but also helps customers feel more secure when using banking services.
Ms. Dang Thi Bich Triem, Deputy Director of VietinBank Phu Yen, said: In the past time, the bank has continuously communicated through many channels, announced through the VietinBank iPay e-banking application and at transaction points about updating biometrics to avoid transaction interruptions after January 1, 2025. This is an important regulation to enhance security and ensure safety in financial transactions. Therefore, VietinBank Phu Yen has arranged human resources ready to guide and support biometric updates when customers have a need.
Remember, on July 1, 2024, when Decision 2345 of the State Bank of Vietnam required biometric authentication when transferring money from 10 million VND/time and 20 million VND/day took effect, many people gathered at bank transaction points to wait for support for biometric registration. At that time, customers who updated themselves on the electronic banking application also encountered errors due to a sudden increase in traffic. Therefore, banks recommend that customers proactively take the time to update information as soon as possible, avoiding waiting until January 1, 2025 to rush to update, causing overload and congestion.
