Urge customers to update their biometric data.

Việt NamViệt Nam09/12/2024

Recently , many banks have been sending notifications reminding customers to update their biometric documents and data to avoid transaction disruptions . Some banks are opening outside of regular business hours to support customers ; others are launching promotions offering cash incentives to encourage customers to update their biometrics .

According to regulations from the State Bank of Vietnam, from January 1, 2025, account holders/bank cardholders who have not updated their biometric data will have their online money transfers, bill payments, and mobile phone top-ups temporarily suspended; and their cash withdrawals and transfers at ATMs will also be temporarily suspended. Customers also need to update their identification documents if these documents have expired.

Launch promotions , extend trading hours .

To help customers avoid transaction disruptions when the State Bank of Vietnam's regulations take effect, many banks have recently sent notifications recommending that customers promptly complete the verification of their personal identification documents and biometric information of account holders/cardholders. Some banks have even set up reminder notifications whenever users log into their online banking applications to urge customers to do so.

At Vietcombank, the bank not only sent out notifications but also opened its branches outside of regular business hours from November 23, 2024 to January 15, 2025 to assist customers in updating their biometric data and expired identification documents. Specifically, from Monday to Friday, the bank is open from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM; on Saturday, it is open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. According to a representative of Vietcombank Phu Yen , customers can update their biometric data and identification documents directly on the VCB Digibank digital banking application or bring their valid ID card/chip-embedded citizen ID card to Vietcombank branches for assistance.

Several other banks are offering promotional programs to encourage customers to update their biometric information. For example, from now until December 31, 2024, HDBank customers who complete the biometric information update and make at least one active transaction will receive 20,000 VND credited to their account. Similarly, MBBank is running a program offering weekly cash rewards to customers who successfully update their biometric information on the MB app from November 25 to December 15, 2024.

“Customers only need to successfully update their citizen identification information on the MB app during the promotional period. Each week, after customers complete the update, they will share in that week's cash prize pool. The prizes are randomly distributed into valuable cash gifts…,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Quyen, Director of MB Phu Yen Services.

Implement it early to avoid overload and congestion .

The biometric authentication requirement will begin on July 1, 2024, for transactions of 10 million VND or more per transaction, or 20 million VND or more per day, and transactions on new devices. From January 1, 2025, this regulation will be further tightened by requiring all customers to update their biometrics before they can conduct online transactions.

According to Mr. Tran Van Tri, Deputy Director of the State Bank of Vietnam's Phu Yen branch, in the era of Industry 4.0, more and more fraudulent methods and account impersonation are appearing, making the protection of personal information extremely important. Updating biometric data will help people secure their accounts, reducing the risk of impersonation and fraud. This not only enhances the safety of financial transactions but also helps customers feel more secure when using banking services.

Ms. Dang Thi Bich Triem, Deputy Director of VietinBank Phu Yen, said: "In recent times, the bank has continuously communicated through various channels, including the VietinBank iPay e-banking application and at transaction points, about updating biometric data to avoid transaction disruptions after January 1, 2025. This is an important regulation aimed at enhancing security and ensuring safety in financial transactions. Therefore, VietinBank Phu Yen has assigned personnel to readily guide and support customers in updating their biometric data when needed."

It's worth remembering that on July 1st, 2024, when Decision 2345 of the State Bank of Vietnam, which mandated biometric authentication for transfers of 10 million VND or more per transaction and 20 million VND per day, came into effect, a large number of people flocked to bank branches to wait for assistance with biometric registration. At that time, customers who tried to update their information themselves on the online banking application also encountered errors due to the sudden surge in traffic. Therefore, banks advised customers to proactively update their information as early as possible, avoiding waiting until close to January 1st, 2025, to prevent overload and congestion.
