Liu Hanqing aspired to become a renowned mathematician. His idol was the Chinese mathematician Chen Jingrun (1933-1996).
However, Liu Hanqing's life took an unexpected turn for the worse. From a promising student, the young Hanqing was forced to stop his university studies and return to his hometown to focus on mathematics research. What happened to this mathematical prodigy?
Obsessed with mathematics
Liu Hanqing was born in 1964 in a small village in Jiangsu Province, China. His family was very poor, but knowing their son had a natural talent for learning, they devoted all their resources to his education. From a young age, Liu Hanqing showed a passion for mathematics.
At the age of 11, Liu Hanqing taught himself and mastered mathematics far beyond what was taught in school. In 1980, at the age of 16, Liu Hanqing completed his secondary education and took the university entrance exam. The young man was admitted to Harbin Industrial University, majoring in materials science . Liu Hanqing became the pride of his entire village.
Everyone believed a bright future awaited Liu Hanqing, but during his university years, Liu Hanqing devoted all his time and energy to his passion for mathematics, neglecting other subjects in his curriculum.
Teachers and friends at school all tried to persuade Liu Hanqing to reallocate his study time to improve his exam results, but Hanqing wouldn't listen.
The teenager believed he could pass the exams with his superior intellect, mastering subjects that others took a long time to grasp. However, reality was not as Han Qing imagined; he failed many subjects in the training program.
Despite his alarmingly poor academic performance, Han Thanh refused to change his ways, continuing to ignore the advice of his friends and the warnings of his teachers. Ultimately, Han Thanh was deemed ineligible to continue his studies at the school.
Having started university two years early, Han Thanh eventually had to stop his studies because he didn't meet the academic requirements. Returning home, Han Thanh decided to focus solely on mathematics.

"Ignore" the future
Upon returning to his hometown to live with his parents, Liu Hanqing became even more obsessed with mathematics. The young man studied math day and night, living in his own world , oblivious to his surroundings. Hanqing's parents began to worry about the physical and mental state of their only son.
The villagers also noticed the instability and advised Han Thanh to find a job to balance his life and help his family. They tried to explain to him that his family was still struggling financially, and his parents couldn't bear all the burdens for him forever.
Despite knowing his family was struggling financially, Han Thanh only wanted to pursue his own passion, disregarding any advice he might receive. Gradually, no one interfered in Liu Han Thanh's affairs anymore.
Thus, Han Thanh immersed himself in self-study and research in mathematics for decades. To this day, Liu Han Thanh's life continues to attract the attention of the media and the public in China, because it is a story that shows the bitterly unfortunate deviation of an individual who was once considered a prodigy.
Over the past decades, Liu Hanqing has produced countless scientific papers on mathematical topics, but none have been published because experts perceive the content presented by Hanqing as having knowledge gaps and lacking accuracy.
Han Thanh's self-study process lacked guidance; he had no opportunity to compare, contrast, or re-evaluate his own understanding to see if it was accurate.
Faced with the bitter reality that his entire self-study and research process yielded no results, Liu Hanqing gradually came to his senses and became more realistic.
In his 50s, Liu Hanqing began to think about getting a job to achieve financial independence. He tried working in a factory, but after decades of isolation and being immersed in his own world, Liu Hanqing was bewildered by the factory work and life outside. He couldn't adapt and quickly quit.
Han Qing returned to live with his elderly parents and received a monthly allowance of 400 yuan (approximately 1.5 million VND) from local authorities for families in extreme hardship. His former classmates, aware of his situation, often visited and helped his parents.
The life of the Liu family has remained unchanged over the decades, if not become even more depressing. From the initial high expectations for their child prodigy, Liu Hanqing's parents now have to accept that their son will never change, and they will have to "carry" him for as long as they can.
