As previously reported, Vietnam will have two slots in the 2023-2024 AFC Champions League: Hanoi FC and Hai Phong.
HAGL still does not have a ticket to AFC Cup 2023-2024.
However, only the capital team can go straight to the AFC Champions League group stage. While Hai Phong has to play the play-off.
Specifically, in the first qualifying round taking place on August 8, the port city team will play away at BC Rangers (Hong Kong, China).
If they win in round 1, Hai Phong will face Incheon United (Korea) in the second play-off match taking place on August 15.
The 2022 V-League runner-up will only enter the AFC Champions League group stage if they overcome the Korean team in the second play-off match.
If this happens, HAGL will have a ticket to the AFC Cup. However, if coach Chu Dinh Nghiem and his team lose one of the two matches mentioned above, they will be pushed down to the AFC Cup, and HAGL will not be able to participate in the Asian tournament.
According to information from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the draw for the 2023-2024 AFC Cup group stage will take place on August 24.
Southeast Asia is divided into 3 groups (4 teams each) and the V-League representative (HAGL or Hai Phong) is in the first seed group.
In recent years, football teams in the V-League have made significant marks in the Asian level playground.
The most notable achievements include Hanoi FC reaching the 2019 AFC Cup Inter-Zone final, Viettel having 2 wins in the 2021 AFC Champions League group stage, or HAGL defeating Australia's most traditional team, Sydney FC.
