Vietnam weightlifting team goes to China to train for SEA Games 33

The Vietnamese weightlifting team is entering the peak preparation phase for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33), with a special training trip in China lasting until early December. This is a strategic move to help the athletes reach their best form before entering the biggest regional competition in Thailand.

According to the coaching staff, head coach Duong Thi Ngoc has selected 11 of the best athletes of the national team for this training trip. The detailed list has not been announced to ensure professional factors, but some prominent names such as Tran Minh Tri, Quang Thi Tam, Tran Dinh Thang... have been confirmed to be present in the training session.

Immediately after arriving in China on October 19, the players immediately began high-intensity training without any rest. “This is the pivotal period for the SEA Games, so the athletes must maintain the best physical and technical condition. The team's goal is to reach peak performance at the right time for the competition,” said a representative of the coaching staff. According to the plan, the whole team will focus on perfecting their technique, increasing their strength and adjusting their tactics before moving to Thailand in early December.

Previously, the Vietnamese weightlifting team did not participate in the 2025 World Championships to focus on the SEA Games. Over the past year, the athletes have competed in many international tournaments, notably the 2025 Asian Championships and the 2025 Southeast Asian Championships, thereby having the opportunity to evaluate the strength of opponents in the region.

The coaching staff said that at the 33rd SEA Games, competition tactics will play a decisive role, along with the psychological factors and the bravery of each athlete. Any small mistake can affect the overall performance.

This year, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has applied 14 new weight classes (7 men, 7 women) in the competition system, and host Thailand also agreed to use these weight classes at the 33rd SEA Games. Vietnam has quickly become familiar with this change when applying it at the 2025 National Championship, helping athletes adapt faster before entering the regional arena.
