Too slim a chance for the Vietnam team
On the evening of June 10, the Vietnamese team lost 0-4 to Malaysia at Bukit Jalil Stadium in the second round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Although they held firm in the first half, in the second half, coach Kim Sang-sik's team's defense completely collapsed with 4 goals conceded.
Goals from Figueiredo, Holgado, La'Vere Corbin Ong and Dion Cools helped Malaysia score four goals against Vietnam for the first time in 11 years.
With a resounding victory in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia has risen to the top of Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers with 6 points and a goal difference of +6. The Vietnamese team is second in the group with 3 points and a goal difference of +1.

Because in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, the ticket to the next round is only awarded to the group leader, so to get a ticket to the finals, the Vietnamese team must take the top spot from Malaysia. That is a very difficult task, given the current group situation.
To get a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup, the Vietnamese team needs to win all four remaining matches, including the final match against Malaysia in round six, taking place in March 2026.
In case Malaysia stumbles at least 1 of the next 3 matches (2 matches against Laos, 1 match against Nepal), the Vietnamese team will win the opponent with any score to get the ticket to continue.
Malaysia 4-0 Vietnam: Completely 'frozen' by the naturalized stars
However, if Malaysia wins all three of their next matches, Vietnam must beat Malaysia by at least four goals in the group stage final. According to the rules of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), teams with the same number of points will be ranked by head-to-head difference. If Vietnam wins Malaysia by four goals (4-0, 5-1, 6-2...), the two teams will be ranked by goal difference. If Vietnam wins by five goals, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will automatically qualify.
However, with the difference between the two teams, especially when Malaysia has the service of a team of high-class naturalized stars, the chance of the Vietnamese team winning the rematch is not much.
"We have to try harder. In this match, Malaysia controlled the ball too well. The Vietnamese team didn't even have the ball to play with, even though we tried to put pressure. We have to be more versatile and work harder," Cao Pendant Quang Vinh shared after the match.
