To improve production efficiency, Dong Yen commune has implemented many solutions to change the farming mindset of its people. Instead of planting low-value, short-term food crops, in recent years the commune has encouraged people to switch to high -economic- value fruit trees, selecting varieties suitable for the local soil and climate, gradually forming a concentrated commodity production area.
Currently, Dong Yen commune has over 800 hectares of fruit trees, including approximately 550 hectares of various types of oranges, with a total estimated production of over 8,000 tons per year. In addition, the area of red-fleshed dragon fruit has reached over 130 hectares, an increase of nearly 100 hectares compared to 2020, with an estimated production of over 2,000 tons. Notably, the red-fleshed dragon fruit product of the Dong Yen Red-Fleshed Dragon Fruit Cooperative has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product at the provincial level, contributing to affirming its quality, gradually building its brand, and expanding its market.
As one of the households with a long history of cultivating oranges, Mr. Hoang Cong Khanh from Vinh Chua village shared: "The care is oriented towards biosafety, limiting the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. As a result, the orange orchard grows steadily, has fewer pests and diseases, and the quality of the fruit has improved significantly. Currently, the oranges are in harvest season, and the yellow-fleshed oranges are being bought directly from the orchard by traders at a price of about 10,000 VND/kg."
Along with oranges and dragon fruit, the South American Cavendish banana is being identified by the commune as a new production model with the potential to become a key crop. The banana cultivation is being oriented towards organic farming and VietGAP standards, suitable to the local soil and climate conditions; and is also linked to the development of the OCOP (One Commune One Product) program. In reality, the shift to growing South American Cavendish bananas has yielded significant economic benefits, with expected profits 1.5-2 times higher than many traditional crops. Importantly, the product is sold through contract farming, helping farmers minimize risks, produce with peace of mind, and no longer depend on middlemen.
In Vinh Cha village, Mr. Lo Van Nin is one of the pioneering households that converted 3 hectares of low-yielding orange groves to cultivate South American Cavendish bananas. To date, his family has expanded the area to 10 hectares with over 20,000 banana trees currently growing and developing. According to Mr. Nin, bananas are easy to grow, require simple techniques, are resistant to pests and diseases, and have low investment costs; the first harvest alone yielded nearly 300 million VND, and the production consistently exceeds demand.
Comrade Nguyen Thanh Chung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Yen commune, said: The commune has identified the restructuring of crop patterns as a key solution to form concentrated fruit-growing areas, developing them towards commercial production. Based on this, the commune coordinates with specialized agencies to organize training and guide people in applying scientific and technical advancements to planting and caring for key crops such as oranges, dragon fruit, and bananas; gradually changing the production mindset from fragmented and small-scale to concentrated production, focusing on product quality and value. This creates a foundation for building stable consumption chains and increasing people's income.
The transformation of crop structure linked to value chains not only creates a new direction for agricultural economic development but also helps Dong Yen form a concentrated commodity production area, increase income and improve people's lives, aiming for sustainable agricultural development and opening the door to poverty alleviation for local people.
