Tourists get dirty while swimming in Nha Trang beach

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí02/09/2024

On September 2, many tourists who went swimming in Nha Trang beach in the area opposite Tram Huong tower got oil stains on their hands, feet, and bodies.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Dung, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, said that she and her family went to Nha Trang beach to swim. When walking on the sand near the water's edge, a lot of black dirt got on their feet.

"When I walked on sand, the oil mixed with sand stuck to my body. I tried using paper towels to wipe it off but it didn't come off, so I had to use gasoline to clean the stain," said Dung.

Near this area, two foreign men also complained about having dirt on their hands and feet.

Mr. Huynh Binh Thai, Head of Nha Trang Bay Management Board, said the black substance on Nha Trang beach is clumped oil that has drifted ashore from offshore.

"This type of oil is not fixed, so it is very difficult to handle," said Mr. Thai.

Mr. Luu Thanh Nhan, Vice Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee, said that he has directed relevant units to inspect and handle the situation of oil clumps washing up on Nha Trang beach, affecting tourists.

Nha Trang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company has mobilized 20 workers to continuously sweep and clean up the amount of oil that has drifted onto the beach. This is to try to reduce the impact on the entertainment of tourists when swimming in Nha Trang beach.

A doctor from Khanh Hoa Province Dermatology Hospital recommends that people should not use gasoline to clean dirt caused by oil clumps because it is not good for the skin. The best way to clean is to use soap and water.

"If the clumping oil comes into contact with mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, mouth... it can seriously affect health. If a person exposed to this substance experiences symptoms of redness, burning, or itching, they should see a doctor immediately," the doctor advised.

It is known that this is not the first time Nha Trang beach has seen clumps of oil drifting ashore.

As of early 2022, clumps of oil appeared densely, stretching 3km on the local beach. The environmental company dispatched dozens of workers to clean up.
