The Namib Desert originates in Angola and stretches nearly 2,000 km along the Atlantic coast, through Namibia. In the Nama language, “Namib” means “the place of nothing.”

This is the oldest desert on the planet, with its unique climate and natural conditions dating back millions of years. The area is almost uninhabited, except for a few sparse coastal towns.

One of the most striking sights in the Namib is where the desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, where cold waves crash against the hot sand, creating a surreal and rare sight. It is also the only coastal desert in the world.

The Angolan desert (commonly known as the Namibe desert) feels like stepping into an alien world, with endless stretches of sand and strangely shaped rocks. Visitors can encounter the rare Welwitschia mirabilis plant - a "living fossil" that is more than 1,000 years old, a vivid testament to its tenacious vitality in a harsh environment.

Nearby, the freshwater oasis of Arco offers a dramatic contrast between the arid desert and the calm waters. Not far away, the fishing village of Tombua completes the unique coastal cultural picture, connecting the wild nature with the lives of the indigenous people.
