At this stage, green tourism is being focused on for sustainable development of the smokeless industry. No longer a slogan, sustainable tourism has been concretized in policies and actions from the central to local levels, and enterprises through feasible plans and models that can be replicated. On the national green journey, sustainable tourism has had many remarkable efforts.
Sustainable mobility journey
At the national level, the Government has issued the Tourism System Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045, which clearly defines the goal of developing green, sustainable tourism, associated with environmental protection and promoting national cultural values.
In particular, the “Vietnam Tourism Marketing Strategy to 2030” emphasizes the application of digital technology to modernize marketing activities, improve the effectiveness of international communication and affirm the image of Vietnam tourism on the world map.
Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration Nguyen Trung Khanh said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam National Tourism Administration have also developed specific strategies and action plans to guide this sustainable transformation process.
In particular, the Ministry has issued the program "Developing tourism towards green growth", the project to develop eco-tourism, develop community tourism. The theme of Vietnam's National Tourism Year recently also focused on the theme of sustainability such as: "Green tourism destination" (in 2022 in Quang Nam); "Green convergence" (in 2023 in Binh Thuan) ...
Recently, programs to encourage the reduction of tourism waste have been widely implemented to raise awareness of the community and tourists about environmental protection in localities, becoming a bright spot in the development of green tourism: Ninh Binh with the project Reducing plastic waste in the tourism industry sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Ha Long Bay Do not use single-use plastic; Hoi An has a project City without plastic waste ; Da Lat with the model Green and sustainable tourism ,...
Participating in this roadmap with the state, tourism businesses also integrate sustainable elements into products and services with eco-tours, “net zero” tourism, resorts close to nature, indigenous cultural experiences, organic agriculture... becoming increasingly popular.
Businesses are increasingly using international green certifications to build their reputation, and are proactively sharing their sustainability stories on social media. They are also creating “green” experiences for tourists.
A typical example is in Tra Que vegetable village (Hoi An), where visitors can not only watch but also work in the fields and grow organic vegetables with farmers. This example shows that green tourism can connect people and nature. In 2025, the village was honored by UN Tourism as one of the best tourist villages.
Which solution should be prioritized?
In the context of strong digital transformation becoming one of the most important driving forces for national development in the new era, the National Tourism Administration has been focusing on building a smart tourism ecosystem, integrating data from localities, businesses and management agencies, and putting into operation shared digital platforms throughout the industry to: support management from the central to grassroots levels; support business operations of enterprises; and improve the experience of tourists.
Accordingly, the Department builds a national tourism database system, including information on travel businesses, accommodation establishments, tour guides, tourist destinations and related services, to help manage tourism information synchronously, support management, operation and policy planning for sustainable tourism development.
Currently, some destinations have applied the electronic ticket system such as Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, President Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace, Quan Thanh Temple, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum... This method of managing the entrance ticket system helps control the number of visitors, minimize overload and improve the visitor experience. Notably, the application "Vietnam Travel" is a digital platform integrating multiple services, contributing to comprehensive support for visitors with multiple utilities.
Although digital transformation is identified as a priority solution in the current context, Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam, said that green transport plays an important role.
Because encouraging tourists to prioritize environmentally friendly means of transport not only brings a deeper experience but also directly helps to clean the air, towards Vietnam's ambitious net zero emissions targets.
Mr. Patrick Haverman said that the pilot project that UNDP coordinated with localities to implement in Phu Yen province and Hue city, by launching "Check-in and share Green Transport" stations in Tuy Hoa and Hon Yen, is a step to realize the above orientation.
“By promoting green transport sharing and raising awareness in local communities, UNDP is gradually creating the foundation for a truly sustainable green tourism ecosystem,” Mr. Patrick Haverman affirmed.
According to the UNDP representative, green transformation in tourism in Vietnam needs to focus on four main groups of solutions: green planning; effective destination management; plastic waste-free and low-carbon tourism; sustainable tourism based on nature./.
Communication to raise awareness about sustainable tourism
The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism has launched a website called Vietnam Tourism Environment (https://moitruongdulich.vn) and promoted green tourism on the website https://vietnam.travel.
In 2024, Vietnam hosted the first UN Tourism International Conference on Rural Tourism to affirm the important role of tourism in promoting sustainable development in rural areas; organized the High-level Tourism Forum "Green transformation, NET ZERO tourism - Creating the future" to increase the dissemination of green transformation, promote NET ZERO development for the Vietnamese tourism business community.
The Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development in Vietnam (ST4SD) project for the period 2024-2027 is implemented with the aim of developing Vietnam's tourism industry in a more sustainable and comprehensive manner; the Gender Equality through Equitable Agriculture and Tourism (GREAT) project implemented from 2017-2027 with the Australian Government aims to develop tourism human resources and improve inclusive destination management models...
