Speaking at Asia's most important security forum, Mr Pistorius said countries needed to support the rules-based international order and protect vital shipping lanes.

“To this end, the German Federal Government sent a frigate to the Indo- Pacific in 2021, and again in 2024, will deploy maritime assets – this time a frigate and a supply ship – to the region,” he said.
Mr Pistorius added that the deployment was not aimed at any particular country.
In 2021, a German warship entered the South China Sea for the first time in nearly 20 years, a move that shows Berlin, along with other Western nations, is expanding its military presence in the region amid growing concerns about China's ambitions.
About 40% of Europe's foreign trade passes through the South China Sea shipping lanes.
