Dur Kmăl proactively responds to floods

The heavy rains over the past two days have caused the water level to rise rapidly, making Mr. Le Thanh Tuan's family (team 3, Buon Triet village) restless because more than 1 hectare of aquaculture that was ready for harvest was at risk of being washed away. In the emergency, the commune and village forces were present in time, supporting the reinforcement of the pond banks, fencing nets, and instructing the family on response measures to limit damage.

Mr. Tuan said that without the prompt and responsible support of local forces and people, his family would have difficulty preserving the farming area, especially during times of sudden floodwaters.

Ms. La Thi Thanh Tuyen, Head of Buon Triet village, said that the village has 383 households with 1,583 people. This year, the water level is much higher than in previous years. From early morning, the People's Committee, Party cell, self-management board, local people and security forces supported the transportation of more than 100 bags of rice and the evacuation of 5 households to higher ground. The force was divided into two groups: one group went down to the low-lying areas to help reinforce the pond banks and fences; the other group supported households with sick people, the elderly and families living far away.

On the afternoon of November 20, the water level in Krong village rose very quickly, causing widespread flooding. The village has 96 households with 502 people, most of the houses are low-lying, located close to the riverbank, so the risk of insecurity is very high. The local government has urgently supported people to move rice and livestock and mobilized people to actively coordinate in response.

At around 6 p.m. on November 20, the water level suddenly rose, forcing authorities to urgently evacuate more than 40 households in low-lying areas to safe areas and help people transport their belongings.

Mr. Y Ngong Krue, Head of Krong village, said that every time there is heavy rain, Krong village is always at risk of flooding because it is located close to the river. Thanks to early notification and mobilization, the people were calm and cooperated well during the evacuation process.

Ms. H'Labin Knul, a villager, said that her family's well collapsed and was completely flooded, water flooded into her house, forcing her family to temporarily move to a hill to avoid the flood. Currently, many households in the village are lacking water for daily use and are in dire need of assistance; some areas of crops are also flooded, with a high risk of damage.

Dur Kmal Commune People's Committee said that from November 17 to 20, there was heavy to very heavy rain in the area, the water flow from upstream to Krong Ana River increased, leading to flooding in some areas along the Krong Ana River in Dur Kmal Commune.

As of the afternoon of November 20, there were two areas affected by floods: Krong village and Buon Triet village. Currently, the road from the Krong village community cultural house to the ferry is flooded about 0.3 meters deep (Team 1, Krong village); the road from the Krong village intersection to Buon Triet village is flooded about 1 meter deep, causing traffic to be cut off, posing a high risk of insecurity. There are more than 20 houses flooded about 0.5 meters deep and 5 houses are isolated. The flooded rice area is about 8 hectares.

On the evening of November 20, in Krong village, the water level rose rapidly and authorities were urgently assisting people in evacuating their belongings.

Faced with the heavy rains occurring in the area, the Commune People's Committee has directed the Commune Civil Defense Command to deploy disaster response work; evacuate people to safe places, support people in evacuating, protect property; warn of deep and dangerous flooded areas; direct the Cooperatives managing irrigation works to regularly inspect and strictly implement the operating procedures of assigned reservoirs, to proactively operate to ensure the safety of the works during the flood season and the safety of downstream areas. Proactively arrange permanent forces to operate and regulate reservoirs and be ready to handle possible situations.

Mr. Mai Van Phuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dur Kmal Commune, said that the flood situation in the commune was very complicated. Some households near the riverbank still tried to stay to look after their property, the commune sent forces to mobilize evacuation and support moving furniture to higher ground. For households at high risk, the functional forces resolutely brought them to safe areas. In the face of the lack of domestic water, the commune supported each household with a temporary water tank.

Tonight, the commune will arrange 24/7 staff to respond to unexpected situations.
