Paving the way for biomedical research in Vietnam
From her passion for biotechnology as a high school student in Hoai An (formerly Binh Dinh province - now Gia Lai province), Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Mong Diep has written an admirable journey of a Vietnamese scientist reaching international level.
After graduating, she was retained to teach at Quy Nhon University and began research in the field of agricultural biotechnology. In 2011, fate brought her to biomedical science when she received a scholarship to study at the French National Institute for Research on Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAe) - one of the world's leading research institutes, under the State's Project 322 program.
After successfully completing the program, she continued to be invited to do postdoctoral work at INRAe and Kent State University (USA). Despite many development opportunities, Associate Professor Mong Diep still chose to return to Vietnam, with the desire to build the first biomedical science research laboratory in Binh Dinh, opening a new research direction to serve teaching and life.
In the early days, material conditions were limited, but she always kept in mind that "there must be someone to pave the way". Every year, she spent 3-6 months in France to collaborate on research at INRAe, accumulating experience and transferring knowledge to Vietnamese students. With a creative spirit and a desire to contribute, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Mong Diep became a typical example of the passion for science at Quy Nhon University.
Affirming the position of Vietnamese science in the international arena
Associate Professor, Dr. Mong Diep shared at the scientific conference.
Associate Professor, Dr. Mong Diep has spent many years researching in the field of biomedical science, focusing on artificial hormones to support reproduction. In 2024, she became the only Vietnamese person to qualify for the title of Professor in France and was in the top 3 best candidates in three majors: Physiology, Biochemistry - Molecular Biology and Body Biology. This achievement affirms the outstanding research capacity of Vietnamese female scientists in the international arena.
A year later, she continued to be honored as one of the most influential scientists in the world, according to the rankings of Elsevier Publishing House and Stanford University (USA). As one of 205 honored Vietnamese scientists, Associate Professor, Dr. Mong Diep brings pride to herself, to Quy Nhon University and to the country's science. During the period 2020-2025, she was one of 20 individuals awarded by the school's Principal for outstanding achievements in the patriotic emulation movement.
With her research team, since 2024, she has launched two recombinant hormone products, eCG and hFSH, from the project “Production of single-chain gonadotropins for fertility treatment” funded by the Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VINIF). These two hormones have been successfully tested on mice in Vietnam, Taiwan and France; in which eCG has also been tested on sheep in France by INRAe.
This success opens up the prospect of effective, sustainable infertility treatment at low cost, reducing dependence on imported hormone sources. At the same time, it has high application value in livestock farming, contributing to improving the reproductive productivity of livestock.
Sharing about her research journey, Associate Professor, Dr. Mong Diep confided: “To achieve the title of Professor in France in 2024 and be honored in the world rankings in 2025, I have to make a lot of effort, dare to think, dare to do and dare to take responsibility. I am fortunate to receive the support of my family, colleagues, INRAe Institute and the trust of the leaders of Quy Nhon University. I hope that my research products will soon reach the people, bringing practical benefits to the community.”
Associate Professor Dr. Doan Duc Tung - Rector of Quy Nhon University said that the school always considers developing a team of lecturers and scientists as a key factor to improve the quality of training and research.
“The achievements that Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Mong Diep has achieved are not only her personal pride but also clear evidence of the school's efforts to build an open and creative academic environment,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Duc Tung.
In the 2024-2025 academic year, Quy Nhon University's scientific research and international cooperation activities recorded remarkable progress. Many ministerial, provincial and state-level topics were effectively implemented; 2 patents and 2 utility solution patents were granted; 6 new research groups were established.
In particular, 10 fields of Quy Nhon University Science Journal were included in the scoring list of the State Council of Professors. International cooperation was expanded with many research institutes, universities, and domestic and foreign enterprises; 3 new international projects were signed; the IUC-QNU program phase 1 was effectively implemented.
The school has welcomed hundreds of students from universities around the world such as Belgium, Korea, Japan, Laos, etc. to do internships, academic exchanges, cultural exchanges, affirming its reputation and attraction in training and international cooperation.
