Mr. Hoang Duong Hoa - teacher of A Ngo Primary and Secondary School (La Lay Commune, Quang Tri Province) is one of three outstanding teachers of Quang Tri Province honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Minister of Education and Training when participating in the program "Sharing with Teachers" organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in coordination with the Vietnam Youth Union, on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of Vietnam Teachers' Day.

A challenging journey

For teacher Hoang Duong Hoa, every time he prepares a new lesson, the song "Everyone chooses the easy work, who will take the hard work" always rings out as a reminder.

That is the sound that has accompanied him since he started working in the La Lay border area - where he has worked for more than 5 years, experiencing many difficulties but also full of maturity and meaning.

Born in the southern coastal plains of Quang Tri province, after graduating from Hue University of Education, Mr. Hoa taught at schools near his home. Teaching conditions at that time were quite adequate, roads were convenient, students had good access to knowledge.

However, a new turning point brought Mr. Hoa to a school in the border area, where teaching conditions were still difficult. Here, Mr. Hoa had the opportunity to accompany Pa Ko and Van Kieu students.

In early 2020, after the education civil servant recruitment exam, he received a decision to teach at A Ngo Primary and Secondary School, La Lay commune - a mountainous school on the Vietnam - Laos border, nearly 150 km from home.

The first trip to school was a journey across steep passes and streams, amidst the scorching heat of the dry season and the cold mist of the rainy season. Confusion, worry and even anxiety about the days ahead were the teacher’s feelings at that time.

In reality, people's lives are still full of deprivation; students are eager to learn but access to knowledge is limited.

Attached to the school in the border area, teacher Hoa is always dedicated and enthusiastic with his students.

In particular, the facilities for the IT subject are almost insignificant: the computer room only has three old computers taken from the school's warehouse, which are often broken and operate erratically.

In the first lessons, the scene that the teacher will always remember is the timidity of the students when standing in front of the computer. Some students looked at the keyboard strangely, not daring to touch it; some had never seen a computer in real life.

Before those eager yet fearful eyes, the teacher started with the smallest things: showing how to turn the computer on and off, how to move the mouse, how to type each letter.

When students type their name for the first time, write a short paragraph on Word, draw simple shapes on Paint or create their first PowerPoint slide, their joy spreads to me. For me, those are precious moments, opening the journey of helping students gradually approach technology.

A Ngo Secondary School is the first school to implement IT teaching at all locations. To help students overcome technological illiteracy, Mr. Hoa and his colleagues had to bring computers to each school and each class to teach them.

Lighting up students' passion for technology

Through his teaching time, Mr. Hoa realized that mountainous students learn better when they practice a lot and have direct experience.

Therefore, Mr. Hoa continuously adjusted his methods, reducing theory, increasing practice time, encouraging group work, and creating an environment for students to support each other.

Free tutoring sessions during off-school hours become valuable opportunities for students to gain additional exposure to computers – something not all schools in mountainous areas have.

At the same time, he guides students to research application software for learning, read documents on the Internet, and learn about electronic books and newspapers. Each small step helps students gain more confidence and develop a love for Computer Science.

Mr. Hoa and his students participated and achieved success in the Youth Informatics competition.

Not only stopping at the classroom, Mr. Hoa also encouraged and accompanied students to participate in competitions such as Young Creativity, Young Informatics at the district (old) and provincial levels. Many students' products won prizes at the Quang Tri Province Tourism Ambassador and Young Informatics competitions at the district and provincial levels.

These results are a clear demonstration of the ability of mountainous students to access technology when properly facilitated and guided.

Throughout his career, he has always strived to research, learn and innovate to serve teaching, contributing to the goal of digital transformation by 2030. Despite limited conditions, he has persisted in applying more effective teaching methods, making the most of available learning resources to support students.

Even though every day going to school is a long journey, sometimes having to leave from dawn in the freezing cold of the mountains, even though the facilities and living conditions are still lacking, Mr. Hoa has never been discouraged.

The biggest motivation that I always mention is the progress of my students: they are more confident, more eager to learn and especially interested in Computer Science - the door that opens up many new opportunities for them.

After more than 5 years of working at La Lay, he does not consider it a sacrifice. He calls it a blessing in his career: “Hearing the students laugh and seeing them improve every day gives me more motivation.”

For him, bringing technology to students in mountainous areas is not only about teaching skills, but also about giving them the confidence to rise up.

With his love for the profession, sense of responsibility and desire to contribute, teacher Hoang Duong Hoa is continuing to write a beautiful story of a person who sows knowledge in the remote border areas - a person who persistently brings the light of information technology to the border villages, opening the way for the future for many generations of students.

Mr. Ngo Duy Hung - Vice Principal of A Ngo Secondary School shared: Mr. Hoa is one of the young, enthusiastic teachers who persistently stays with the school, stays with the class, and devotes all his love to his students. With the efforts of Mr. Hoa and other teachers in the school, students in border and remote areas have accessed digital knowledge, become familiar with information technology to open the door to the future.

With his persistent efforts, Mr. Hoang Duong Hoa has received many awards: Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the District People's Committee, Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; for many consecutive years he has been recognized with the title "Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level".
