Rising floodwaters swept away Phu Thien suspension bridge in Lam Dong

At about 10:30 a.m. on November 20, floodwater from the upper Da Nhim River swept away Phu Thien suspension bridge connecting Duc Trong and Ninh Gia communes (Lam Dong).

Phu Thien suspension bridge was swept away by floodwaters.

Initial information, in recent days, due to the continuous rise in water levels from upstream to Dai Ninh hydroelectric reservoir, at 6:30 a.m. on November 20, the regulated water flow through the spillway of Dai Ninh reservoir was 1,350 m3/second.

At 10:00 a.m. the same day, the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control of Dai Ninh Hydropower Company announced an increase in the discharge flow through the spillway of Dai Ninh Lake from 2,000 m3/second to 2,070 ^m3 /second.

Mr. Luu Trung Duong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Duc Trong Commune ( Lam Dong ), said that due to the Da Nhim River rising close to the edge of the bridge, from 9:00 a.m. on November 20, the authorities of Duc Trong and Ninh Gia communes coordinated to prohibit people and vehicles from crossing Phu Thien Bridge (more than 2 meters wide, more than 100 meters long) to ensure safety. Thanks to proactive response, when the bridge was swept away by floodwaters, there were no human casualties.

In the previous days, although the rain lasted for a long time, it was not heavy; the discharge through the spillway of Dai Ninh Lake only fluctuated from 350 to 480 m³/second. However, the sudden increase in water volume on the morning of November 20 caused the bridge to be swept away in a short time.
