This was affirmed by Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan at the ceremony to award certificates of merit from the Ministry of Health to Tu Du Hospital and Children's Hospital 1 for their outstanding achievements in performing transfetal cardiac catheterization interventions on the afternoon of June 9.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung - Director of Children's Hospital 1 - said that the fetal heart catheterization case No. 9 for the Singaporean pregnant woman was a very difficult case because the gestational age was still small. Because she was a foreigner and was referred to Ho Chi Minh City by a leading hospital in Singapore, the doctors were quite concerned about legal responsibility if an undesirable outcome occurred.
"If we intervene successfully, there is nothing to say, but if we fail, it will be very difficult legally," Mr. Hung worried and emphasized that case number 9 is also the only chance that the medical team of the two hospitals tried to save the fetus with the trust of KK Women's and Children's Hospital.
According to Mr. Hung, although the Singaporean mother’s fetus had a successful heart catheterization at 25 weeks, there is still a long way to go. The ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of both mother and baby before birth.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Hai - Director of Tu Du Hospital - said that this 9th fetal heart catheterization case has a special and lucky meaning - as it is a foreign case but the most difficult and was performed after 9 years the hospital started implementing fetal intervention.
According to Mr. Hai, the success of the surgery was the result of close coordination between the medical team of Tu Du Hospital and Children's Hospital, along with timely approval from the Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management and the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health.
Regarding the health of the mother and fetus, Mr. Hai said that doctors are closely monitoring and emphasized that the fetus having a heart catheterization is only an initial success. The ultimate goal is for the fetus in the mother's womb to be born healthy.
"The attention, monitoring and direction of the Ministry of Health and the Department of Health are the motivation for doctors to continue to quietly and silently prepare for fetal heart catheterization for the next pregnant women," Mr. Hai shared.
The Deputy Minister of Health directed the two hospitals not to be complacent, to continue to closely monitor the health of the fetus and the mother, and to coordinate with the hospital in Singapore to bring the mother back home safely in the coming time.

At the end of the ceremony, Mr. Thuan respectfully praised the collective of Tu Du Hospital and Children's Hospital 1 for constantly innovating, researching, learning and pioneering in the field of fetal medicine.
At the same time, the close, smooth, responsible and humane coordination between the two hospitals, under the close direction of the Director of the Department of Health, was recognized throughout the process from diagnosis, consultation, planning, to implementation and post-intervention monitoring.
"I believe that miracles like today will continue to be a source of inspiration for the entire industry, so that we can boldly step out of the "safe zone" of therapeutic medicine, moving towards preventive medicine, early intervention medicine and precision medicine - for a healthy Vietnam from the womb", the Deputy Minister of Health hopes.
