Some Facebook users recently received a surprise notification from the app, in which the platform used photos in the camera roll, including images that had never been uploaded, to create collages using AI.

According to TechCrunch , this notification appears when a user posts a new article. In it, Meta clearly states that the purpose of using photo data is to generate creative suggestions. In addition, the algorithm can prioritize selecting photos from the camera roll and uploading necessary information such as time, location and subject to the cloud system. However, not all users see this notification.

The announcement also states that the photo data will not be used for advertising purposes. However, the vague wording has raised concerns that Meta may be secretly using users’ personal photos to train its internal AI models.

In response to the backlash, Meta told The Verge that the company “is not currently training AI models on these photos.” According to Maria Cubeta, Meta’s director of communications, this is a limited test with the goal of making it easier for users to share content.

“These suggestions only appear with user consent, are completely private, and can be turned off at any time. Data from the camera roll may help improve the suggestions but is not used to improve the AI models in this experiment,” Ms. Cubeta emphasized.

The experimental feature has been quietly rolling out since early 2025, according to some users. In fact, Facebook has an official Help page that explains how to enable or disable the “camera roll creative ideas” feature.

For those who have agreed to share data when the notification appears, they can go to Settings, select Options, and go to Camera Roll Sharing Suggestions to turn this feature off.

As big tech companies race to develop AI, Meta’s new experiment shows its ambition to combine machine learning with personal data. But it also raises serious questions about privacy and transparency in user data collection.
