The patient said he had back pain since mid-2021, then felt back pain and fatigue so he went to a traditional healer's house in Datek, Lam Dong to have his joints adjusted.
After about half a day of joint manipulation, my whole body felt sluggish and tired. When I touched my back, the areas where the manipulation was done were painful. I felt like my vertebrae were slipping and dislocated. When I moved, breathed heavily, or exercised, I felt pain.
The pain got worse so I went to the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital for examination.
On May 29, Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital, said that through examination, the patient was found to have a slight hunchback. When touching both sides of the thoracic spine and vertebrae, the patient felt sharp pain. The X-ray film showed that the thoracic vertebrae T5-T6 were damaged and cracked right at the costal cartilage joints on both sides. The left rib 10 was broken near the costal cartilage joints. The costal cartilage joints 11 and 12 were torn compared to the other joints.

Since the injury, the patient has not rested but has been moving frequently, twisting, reaching, and carrying things. This may be a factor leading to the condition of bones and joints not healing for a long time.
According to Dr. Calvin, recently the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital has received many cases of victims of bone and joint manipulation. This is the result of following the trend on social networks. Some witch doctors or technicians use too much force with the purpose of creating loud noises like in the videos to prove their "skills".
When manipulating joints, especially spinal joints, the health of the spine must be ensured before performing this technique, ensuring that the vertebrae are not slipped, collapsed, or cracked. Improper manipulation can cause spinal cord damage and paralysis, even death.
"Joint manipulation is a technique that increases the range of motion of joints, reduces tension, stiffness, and relaxes them in a short period of time. It should not be used regularly and it is not effective to bend the joints loudly, but to evaluate before and after treatment," Dr. Calvin shared.
