Faced with climate change and increasingly stringent international market demands, many Vietnamese farmers and businesses are turning to organic coffee as a sustainable development strategy. Organic coffee is grown naturally, without the use of agricultural chemicals during the care and harvesting process. This model not only protects consumers’ health but also contributes to reducing emissions and maintaining the ecosystem.

Organic coffee is currently favored by the high-end market, bringing great opportunities for Vietnam's exports. However, not all coffee varieties are suitable for this cultivation method. The selection of varieties must ensure disease resistance, good adaptation to local conditions and meet high quality standards.

In Vietnam, Arabica coffee varieties such as Catuai, Typica or Bourbon are widely grown in highland areas such as Lam Dong and Son La because of their distinctive flavors, suitable for the requirements of the international market. For Robusta coffee, new varieties such as TR4 and TRS1 are highly appreciated for their natural resistance to pests and stable productivity, very suitable for the organic farming model in the Central Highlands.

The initial forecast for the next Robusta crop year (2025/26) is around 28 million bags.

According to the latest report from the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), the average export price of Robusta in the first half of April 2025 reached a record high of 5,415 USD/ton. During the same period, Vietnam exported a total of 79,163 tons of green coffee, earning 437.73 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, output increased by 8.5%, while value skyrocketed by 68.8%.

The European Union (EU) is also making notable adjustments to its deforestation control regulations. To reduce the procedural burden, the EU plans to make it easier for importers to demonstrate transparency. The implementation of the regulation was previously postponed by the EU for a year, to October 2024, and will officially apply at the end of 2025. The European Commission also said that it will classify countries according to their deforestation risk level from now until the end of June.
