Trade between the United States and Brazil has come to a standstill after the United States imposed a 50 percent import tariff on several Brazilian agricultural products, including roasted and processed coffee. This decision has virtually paralyzed coffee trade between the two countries and increased uncertainty in the global market.
Brazil is the main supplier of Arabica coffee to the US. Therefore, the new tax policy makes US importers hesitant to sign new orders, while import costs also increase sharply, affecting the entire supply chain.
In New York, traders said Brazilian coffee shipments were being held at ports or delayed for export due to uncertainty over the final tariff policy, causing market jitters and putting pressure on coffee prices to trend lower in the short term.
In addition to disrupting supply chains, high tariffs are making Brazilian coffee less competitive in the U.S. market, shifting trade flows and imposing additional costs on U.S. roasters.
