Cautious pig herd restoration before Tet: Quang Tri tightens disease control
Mr. Nguyen Quang Chien, Vice Chairman of Vinh Thuy Commune People's Committee (Quang Tri Province), said that pig farming still plays an important role in the livelihood of local people. Many households are looking forward to re-raising their pigs in time to supply the Lunar New Year market, but the authorities recommend strictly following safety measures to limit risks. After the heavy losses caused by African swine fever, the commune has stepped up propaganda so that people can only re-raise their pigs when they meet the conditions and are permitted by the authorities.
According to Mr. Nguyen Phu Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province, African swine fever is gradually being controlled, people can safely use pork products on the market. However, herd restoration must still be under close supervision to minimize losses for farmers. The Department has issued a document guiding localities to tighten the herd restoration process, and at the same time recommended that farmers in the epidemic area switch to raising poultry and cattle to supplement food sources for Tet.
For localities that have declared the end of the epidemic, herd restoration must be carried out step by step, with confirmation from specialized agencies. Mr. Quoc said that households should only "raise indicators" at a scale of 10-15% of the capacity of the barn. After 21 days, if the pigs are healthy and developing normally, people can expand the scale. To avoid re-outbreaks, pigs must be raised in bio-secure conditions, in closed barns and with minimal exposure to pathogens from the environment or intermediate hosts.
