Overall, the domestic pig market last week witnessed mixed developments between regions. The North continued to increase prices in many provinces and cities, while the South adjusted prices down in many localities. The Central - Central Highlands continued to keep prices stable, without many significant fluctuations.
Pig prices slightly decrease, farmers still "pocket" high profits
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper , pig farmers in Tien Giang are currently selling live pigs at prices ranging from 7 to 7.2 million VND per quintal, down more than 300,000 VND per quintal compared to last week. However, with this price, farmers still earn a profit of about 2 million VND per quintal. Notably, during this period, livestock farming costs have increased significantly, especially the costs for preventing African swine fever, which is at risk of re-emerging.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Nha in Cai Be, Tien Giang has just sold 18 pigs for 71,500 VND/kg, lower than the initial price of 75,000 VND/kg. Despite the increase in food and medicine costs, he still made a profit of nearly 2 million VND/quintal.
As of May 31, 2025, the total pig herd in Tien Giang reached about 350,000, an increase of 24% over the same period. High pig prices for a long time have encouraged people to boldly restore their herds, especially in key districts and large-scale farming models.
In May, Tien Giang did not record any dangerous livestock diseases. Since the beginning of the year, African swine fever has occurred in 6 households in 4 districts, affecting 105 out of a total herd of 120, all of which have been destroyed (2,684 kg). In addition, a case of foot-and-mouth disease was also detected and treated in Hau My Bac A commune, Cai Be district.
Currently, livestock farming households, business units and slaughterhouses in the area, together with the veterinary sector, are proactively promoting disease prevention and food safety and hygiene to ensure the supply of clean and safe meat for consumers.
