Today, August 16, 2025, the domestic rice market remains stable, but the international market has witnessed a major turning point: Vietnam has surpassed Thailand, rising to the second position globally in rice exports, with a "highly expensive" price that makes competitors wary. This strong recovery brings a big surprise in the context of plummeting world rice prices.
Domestic rice prices remain stable
In the Mekong Delta, rice prices today remained at the same level, with no significant fluctuations. The end-of-season rice supply is scarce, leading to slow transactions in many localities. Traders have reduced purchases of fragrant rice, causing the price of this type to slightly decrease.
In some localities such as Can Tho, An Giang , Dong Thap, the buying and selling of rice and paddy is quite slow. In Ca Mau, traders buy in bulk. In general, the domestic market has not had much fluctuation, the prices of rice and finished rice products remain at the old level.

Vietnam's export market shines
Vietnam's rice export prices remain unchanged from yesterday. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA):
25% broken rice: 371 USD/ton.
100% broken rice: 339 USD/ton.
Standard 5% broken rice: 395 USD/ton – highest among major exporting countries.
Vietnam surpassed Thailand to become the second most expensive rice in the world. Our country also introduced a special exclusive rice, which Japan ordered in large quantities at high prices.
In the first 7 months of the year, exports reached 5.5 million tons, earning 2.81 billion USD - up 3.1% in volume but down 15.9% in value compared to 2024, due to the average price of only 514 USD/ton (18.4% lower).
In early August, Vietnamese rice prices reversed course and skyrocketed, despite a global decline. On August 7, 5% broken rice hit $395 per ton, up $17 from a low of $378 per ton on July 23. Notably, Vietnamese prices were higher than those of Thailand ($362), Pakistan ($365), and India ($379), despite India’s plan to dump 20 million tons of cheap rice.
This breakthrough promises new momentum for Vietnam's rice industry, amid global fluctuations.
