Coffee prices rise due to US-Brazil trade tensions

Coffee prices rose sharply in the first trading session of the week in response to the US threat to impose a 50% tariff on most goods imported from Brazil. US roasters have stepped up purchases to stock up before the new tax policy takes effect on August 1, according to Reuters.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he hoped to resolve the tensions through diplomatic means, but he also affirmed that there would be retaliatory measures if the US officially imposed new tariffs.

The United States is currently the world’s largest coffee consumer, with Brazil accounting for about 33% of the country’s coffee imports. An American trader said that if the 50% tax rate is applied, roasters will rush to buy all the Brazilian coffee that has arrived at the port with the old 10% tax rate, and may even cancel old contracts to avoid the high tax.

Experts warn that the new tariffs could halt nearly all coffee exports from Brazil to the U.S., and that the U.S. would have difficulty finding alternative sources of supply at comparable prices and volumes.

The new tax policy will not only affect the supply chain but also push up domestic coffee prices in the US – which are already high – further, thereby putting pressure on consumption. In the long term, if Brazil shifts its exports to other markets, world coffee prices will also be under pressure to increase.

Pepper prices recover slightly

In Gia Lai province, pepper prices increased by VND1,000/kg compared to the previous trading session and are currently at VND139,000/kg.

Ho Chi Minh City also recorded a similar increase, with pepper prices currently at 139,000 VND/kg.

In Dak Lak province, pepper price today increased by 1,000 VND/kg, traders are buying at 141,000 VND/kg.

In Dong Nai province, pepper prices also increased by VND1,000/kg, to VND139,000/kg.

In Lam Dong, pepper prices jumped 1,000 VND/kg after falling in the previous session, currently at 140,000 VND/kg.

World pepper prices are stable

According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), at 5:00 a.m. on July 16, 2025, the world pepper market remained stable after yesterday's sharp decline.

Specifically, the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) is currently at 7,240 USD/ton; while Muntok white pepper is traded at 10,092 USD/ton.

In Malaysia, the market remained stable, with ASTA black pepper prices reaching USD 8,900/ton and ASTA white pepper at USD 11,750/ton.

Brazil maintained stable prices compared to the previous session, currently purchasing black pepper at 5,800 USD/ton.

Vietnam is still maintaining a stable trend after many increasing sessions, the export price of 500 g/l black pepper is at 6,440 USD/ton, 550 g/l is at 6,570 USD/ton and the price of white pepper is 9,150 USD/ton.

Vietnam benefits as two rivals face tariffs

Market information shows that Indonesia and Brazil are facing high taxes when exporting pepper to the US from the beginning of August 2025, at 32% and 50% respectively.

In that context, Vietnamese pepper has a clear competitive advantage in the US market, which prioritizes stable supply and affordable prices.

According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), the market last week had many mixed fluctuations: in India, domestic and export pepper prices decreased simultaneously; Indonesia recorded a decrease in black pepper prices, while white pepper remained stable; in Malaysia, white pepper prices remained the same but other types decreased; on the contrary, Sri Lanka recorded an increase in domestic pepper prices.

In the Vietnamese market, domestic black pepper prices tended to decrease last week, while white pepper prices remained stable. Meanwhile, Cambodia saw an increase in black pepper prices, and the Chinese market had no fluctuations in white pepper.
