World market

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery rose 32 yuan to 2,990 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures continued to fall as market focus shifted to the issue of falling steel consumption during the low demand season in China – the world’s largest steel consumer.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.14% to 701 yuan ($97.60) a tonne.

On the Singapore Exchange, the benchmark iron ore price for July delivery (SZZFN5) also fell 0.8% to $94.7 a tonne.

In the absence of core drivers, prices of key steelmaking raw materials are expected to move in a narrow range amid weak seasonal demand, analysts at Galaxy Futures said in a note.

“There has been no major change in the fundamentals of the iron ore market. The previous rally driven by strong coal prices has weakened, so the iron ore price has also adjusted lower,” said Zhuo Guiqiu, an analyst at brokerage Jinrui Futures.

However, Zhuo said that the room for iron ore prices to fall is relatively limited, as hot metal output remains high despite production cuts, along with port inventories that are on a downward trend.

Hot metal output – an indicator used to gauge iron ore demand – remains at elevated levels at the moment.

Galaxy Futures also pointed out that, despite a trade truce between China and the US, China's recent steel exports have shown signs of slowing down, negatively affecting demand for input materials.

Meanwhile, other input materials for the steel industry, such as coking coal and coke (DCJcv1), continued to record gains – albeit at a slower pace – with increases of 1.68% and 0.56%, respectively, after rising more than 6% in Wednesday's trading session.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, steel products recorded slight fluctuations within a narrow range, with rebar up 0.14%, hot-rolled coil down 0.19%, wire rod (SWRcv1) up 0.06%, while stainless steel rose 0.2%.
