Steel price today 76 Positive developments

The new 50% US tariff on imported steel has dealt a heavy blow to the already weakened European steel market. According to the latest economic and market forecasts of the European Steel Association (EUROFER), the growth that was expected in 2025 will not happen. Instead, the EU will see its fourth consecutive year of steel consumption decline (-0.9%) in 2025, following a 1.1% decline in 2024.

The industrial sector remains weak, despite the relative resilience of the services sector. Total steel consumption will not increase significantly until 2026, and consumption volumes are still well below pre-pandemic levels.

Steel consumption in the European Union continues to decline and according to EUROFER's “Steel Market and Economic Outlook 2025–2026, Q2” report, both actual and apparent steel consumption in the EU will continue to decline by 3.3% and 0.9% year-on-year, respectively.

Actual consumption, which represents the actual steel use by key sectors, is expected to fall by 4.7% in 2024 and by 8.5% in the fourth quarter alone. The forecast further decline in 2025 reflects the continuing crisis amid low business confidence, weak industrial production and the lack of prerequisites for demand recovery.

Apparent consumption, including stock movements, recorded a slight increase at the end of 2024 (+0.5% y/y), but was still down 1.1% for the year as a whole. EUROFER notes that expectations of an improvement in 2025 have not materialised due to new risks, in particular the impact of new US trade tariffs.

Domestic production is also under great pressure due to the high proportion of imported steel: in 2024, the proportion of imports accounted for 27% of total consumption – one of the highest levels in history. Meanwhile, domestic steel supply decreased by 2.8% compared to the same period last year.

EUROFER does not expect the market to recover before 2026, when apparent steel consumption is expected to increase by 3.4% year-on-year. However, this recovery is only possible if economic conditions improve and global tensions ease.
