Durian news today 5/1/2025
The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VinaFruit) has just released a preliminary report on the import and export situation of fruits and vegetables in April 2025.
Accordingly, as of April 21, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value reached nearly 453 million USD, down 5.3% compared to the previous month and down more than 25% compared to the same period in 2024. The total for the first 4 months of the year reached a preliminary 1.6 billion USD, down more than 14% compared to the same period last year.
The reason for the decline is that the export value to the Chinese market has decreased due to difficulties in exporting durian. By the end of the first quarter of 2025, fruit and vegetable exports to China only reached 521 million USD, a decrease of more than 238 million USD, or 31% compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the US market recorded a growth of 65% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, reaching more than 111.5 million USD. This also helped the US increase its market share from 5% in the first quarter of 2024 to nearly 9.6% in the first quarter of 2025.
According to VinaFruit, this growth is thanks to the company boosting exports of coconut, dragon fruit, mango, etc. to this country.
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export prospects in the second quarter of 2025 are forecast to increase sharply, especially after the State visit of General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping to Vietnam from April 14 to 15, 2025.
The signed protocols include: Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for chili peppers exported from Vietnam to China; Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for passion fruit exported from Vietnam to China.
China is currently Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable export market, so export growth to China will have a positive impact on the entire industry.
Besides, durian exports are forecast to increase thanks to supply and demand from the Chinese market.
Vietnamese durian faces difficulties in China. Tightening quarantine, new competitor emerges.Right from the beginning of the durian season, Vietnam has encountered many obstacles when exporting to China. Tight quarantine and the rise of new competitors in the region have pushed prices down and increased pressure on export businesses. |
