Hainan durian booms in China, threatening Vietnam and Thailand's position

According to a report from the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade , Hainan durian is recording remarkable growth in the Chinese market - a country that consumes more than 85% of the total global durian output annually.

This type of durian stands out with many strengths such as natural ripening, short transportation time, thick flesh, mild sweetness and lighter aroma compared to imported durians from abroad.

However, the Hainan durian industry still faces many difficulties to overcome, including unsynchronized cultivation techniques, simple processing procedures, and risks from natural disasters such as storms and floods.

Notably, YA enterprise – one of the leading units in this field – has been applying modern farming techniques, using organic fertilizers and investing heavily in post-harvest infrastructure to improve product quality.

The durian harvest season in Hainan usually starts from late June to early July, with major varieties such as Monthong, Musang King, Kanyao and a small amount of black thorn durian.

Hainan's expected output this year is nearly 2,000 tons, a significant increase compared to the first crop in 2023.

The rapid growth of Hainan durian is creating great competitive pressure on traditional exporting countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.

Therefore, exporters need to focus on improving quality as well as ensuring product freshness to maintain their position in the market.

However, many experts believe that Hainan durians will find it difficult to completely replace imported products due to differences in origin and unique flavor. The Chinese market is still large, with enough space for both domestic and imported products to develop together.

Also according to the Import-Export Department, data from the Customs Department shows that Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first 6 months of 2025 reached 3.1 billion USD, down 6.7% over the same period last year.
