Difficulties in exporting durian
China tightens quality control of imported durian, especially indicators such as cadmium and yellow O. In the first 6 months of 2025, Vietnam's durian export turnover reached 611.5 million USD, down 45% compared to the same period last year.
The shipments were found to contain yellow O – a chemical banned from use in food, forcing quarantine agencies to increase document checks and sample testing. Only batches with “no detection” results were tested in the usual way.
Vietnam is facing strong competition from Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia and the Philippines. China is also expanding its durian cultivation area, increasing pressure on exports from Vietnam.
However, the market could recover in the August-October 2025 period if quality improves and inspection processes become more standardized.
