In recent years, the prices of poultry feed have increased simultaneously, while the selling price of poultry has tended to decrease sharply, many poultry farming households in Don Xa commune (Binh Luc district) are at risk of loss. So, how to support poultry farming households to overcome difficulties and stabilize production development? That is the problem not only for poultry farmers but also for the Party Committee and government of Don Xa commune.
For many months now, the high price of animal feed has made many poultry farmers in Don Xa commune worried. Mr. Nguyen Trung Chinh in Thien Ly village, who has been raising chickens for many years, said: Currently, my family raises about 10,000 chickens, industrial chicken breed. Every 45 days, I sell a batch. After each crop, I earn about 130 million VND/batch. However, the price of feed has increased, from 325,000 VND/bag before to 350 - 370,000 VND/bag. On average, each bag of feed has "increased in price" by about 25 - 45,000 VND (not including other expenses). At this rate, the input cost is higher than the value of the income, so farmers like me will find it difficult to make a profit, and may even have to make up for the loss.
Like Mr. Chinh, Mr. Ngo Van Lap (Thien Ly village), who has more than 10 years of experience in raising chickens, shared: Currently, I raise about 7,000 chickens, industrial chicken breed. Previously, when feed prices had not increased, my flock consumed about 14 bags/day, equivalent to 4,500,000 VND for feed, however, the high feed prices have "increased" the price by about 450,000 VND/day.
To overcome some of the current difficulties, Mr. Lap has used mixed feed from agricultural by-products such as vegetables and fruits found in nature, so the cost of feed has also been reduced somewhat. According to a feed dealer in Thanh Nghia village, Don Xa commune, since the beginning of the year, the price of feed has increased many times, farmers have reduced their herds sharply, many people are considering switching to raising other breeds. Therefore, the amount of feed sold on the market has also decreased significantly.
If in 2023, Don Xa commune had 110 poultry farming households with a scale of more than 500,000 birds/batch, the consumption output reached more than 300,000 birds/month, now the number of farming households has decreased to only 75 households with a scale of 350,000 birds/batch. The reason for the difficult situation is due to unstable poultry prices, high prices of breeding animals and feed, harsh climate, polluted air, complicated disease developments... Many farming households with small scale, low profits, so they do not have enough costs to temporarily stop farming.
According to Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Don Xa Commune, Tran Ngoc Binh, due to the influence of imported raw materials for feed production tending to increase, the price of feed has also been pushed up. To overcome difficulties for poultry farmers, the People's Committee of the commune directed the agricultural cooperative to strengthen propaganda, dissemination, and guidance for farmers to do a good job of disease prevention and control, proactively update market price information, select suitable livestock with potential and advantages of the locality when increasing and restoring herds, avoiding the situation of supply exceeding demand.
In addition, the Commune People's Committee coordinates with the Social Policy Bank to create conditions and support livestock households to borrow capital to promptly overcome difficulties. In addition, livestock households are advised to use feed processed from available raw materials, limit the use of industrial feed, to reduce costs. At the same time, innovate livestock farming methods, promote the construction of disease-free livestock areas and facilities, and apply science and technology to livestock farming. Select partners to supply materials and breeds, and find product outlets to ensure livestock farming is linked to the consumer market.
